BOSTON -- A woman accused in an elaborate identity theft ring in Boston appeared in court Monday.
NewsCenter 5's Rhondella Richardson reported that Carol Silva is facing a fugitive charge relative to identity theft. Silva, 54, of Hyde Park, was on the run, allegedly ruining lives for two years. Police said she'd steal pocketbooks for money and then steal the victim's identity.
"Nowadays, a pocketbook is worth $30,000. Once they get your pocketbook, they get your ID, they get your bank account information, they go out and have phony IDs made in your name. They will go to your bank. They will deposit checks stolen from other people's pocketbooks, deposit them into your bank account, over inflate your bank account by $30,000 or $40,000. Them they'll comeback the next day and withdraw the funds out of it," Boston Police Department Lt. Steven Blair said.
Boston police arrested Silva Friday at a relative's home. Police said that they found hats and disguises when Silva was arrested. She was held without bail.
"Some items were seized relative to all the identity frauds that have occurred in the city of Boston and Maryland," Blair said.
Police are now searching for the alleged ringleader, also known as "The Professor."
"There's warrants out of Massachusetts for Charles Bellon. There's warrants out of Maryland, Washington, DC. He's wanted all over the place," Blair said.
