BELLEVILLE, Ill.-- St. Louis University Hospital doctors on Thursday said Belleville Police Sgt. Jon Brough is lucky to be alive.
They also said he was permanently blinded, will lose some sense of smell, must have a series of reconstructive surgeries to his face and will undergo years of rehabilitation.
But the doctors said blood loss was the immediate threat after Brough was shot. It took them 12 hours to control his bleeding.
"The severity of the bleeding was remarkable. The injury could very well have been fatal," said Dr. Aaron Scifres, a trauma surgeon.
Doctors said the impact of the shot may have damaged some brain function, but the extent will not be known until more tests are made. A CAT scan revealed some bleeding within the skull.
Brough also underwent a tracheostomy on Saturday, the day after he was shot during a raid to arrest double murder suspect Larry J. Sicka in a Belleville house. He remains on a ventilator and is being treated with pain medications that keep him sedated.
He is on a feeding tube and will not be able to feed himself for weeks. He also will be unable to speak for weeks because of the trachea tube and pain medications, which essentially are inducing a comatose state.
His wife, Wendy Brough, was thankful.
"I cannot begin to express the gratitude I feel in my heart. I am comforted by my family and my friends -- old friends, new friends and those friends I have yet to meet," she said during the conference with doctors.
Sicka later took his own life with the shotgun. He was suspected of killing his former in-laws on Thursday and had a history of domestic violence.
Brough and his family have received an outpouring of public support since he was shot. Donations may be made at any Commerce Bank branch or mailed to the Jon Brough Trust Fund, c/o Jeanne Dalman, Commerce Bank, 5701 W. Main St., Belleville, IL.

Wounded Ill. officer gets prosthetic eyes

The Associated Press

BELLEVILLE, Ill. — A former Belleville police sergeant blinded after being shot in the face by a homicide suspect two years ago is making another advancement.
Jon Brough is getting prosthetic eyes, meaning he no longer will need dark sunglasses to hide the fact he has empty eye sockets.
Brough was permanently blinded and lost his senses of smell and taste in the November 2006 shooting by a cornered double-slaying suspect who later killed himself.
He has undergone several surgeries and still faces more.
