Sources tell NBC4 that Mayor-elect Adrian Fenty has chosen Cathy L. Lanier to be the next chief of the Metropolitan Police Department.
Lanier is a 16-year veteran of the force and is currently the D.C. police commander for Homeland Security.
She joined the department in 1990 and quickly rose through the ranks, serving as a uniformed patrol officer and master patrol officer.
Lanier was promoted to sergeant in 1994 and then to lieutenant in 1996.
She was also an active member of the department's reorganization team known as the G-21, which helped to develop the department's community policing model.
Lanier was promoted to captain in 1999 and then later that year she was promoted to inspector and placed in charge of the Department's Major Narcotics Branch/Gang Crime Unit.
In August 2000, she was promoted to commander in charge of the Fourth District before being put in charge of the department's Homeland Security division.
