(Milford-WTNH, November 19, 2006 9:20 AM)_ Police in Milford are trying to figure out what started a massive brawl at the Westfield Connecticut Post Mall that involved hundreds of people.
Nine people were arrested Saturday night.
Police say they were involved in a big fight that broke out just before 9:00 PM.
Authorities aren't sure what started everything.
There were scuffles all over the mall, including one in the food court, and another by the bus stop on the mall's south side. Police say the brawl began in the food court area.
"Hundreds of people became involved in this incident based on the fact that they were gathering around, running around, trying to see what was going on," says Officer Vaughan Dumas of the Milford Police Department. "We chose to activate from surrounding towns. We needed additional police resources to transport prisoners. We requested K-9's from various departments as a deterrent to get people to calm down and leave the mall."
In all, it took seven police department and the state police to break up the fights. Officers from the State Police, Seymour , Stratford , East Haven, and West Haven responded for crowd control and prisoner transport.
The people under arrest are all between 13 and 23 years old. Police say one person arrested was found in possession of a concealed pellet gun. There are no complaints that this weapon was discharged during any of the incidents. Police found it during the man's arrest.
Five people had minor injuries, two of them were taken to the hospital for further treatment. One person was treated for asthma, one for a facial injury, two people were sprayed with mace, and another person was bitten by a police dog.
No police officers were hurt while breaking up the fights.
