Stun guns remain a controversial weapon for police officers around the country, and now, a new technology is providing a lens into what really happens when officers are trying to use the guns, NBC11's Damian Trujillo reported.
"I dearly miss him. Especially (during) the holidays. I know he will never walk in and bring smiles to our family any more," said stun gun critic Grace Perez.
Perez lost her brother in October 2005 after a scuffle that included a stun gun with San Leandro police officers.
"If you Taser an individual over several times, it's like using a handgun. What's the difference? You're killing this individual slowly and surely," Perez said.
San Leandro police said they can't comment about the case, because the Perez family is suing.
Greenfield Police Chief Joseph Grebmeier said during the past few month, his 17 officers have been using the new TASER CAM, which records a confrontation with full audio and video -- even in zero-light conditions.
"I think it's one of the most important things," Grebmeier said. "Without the public's trust, we can't do our job."
"One of the NAACP's positions is to acquire a ban on all Tasers across the country," said Rick Callender, of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Silicon Valley chapter.
NBC11 downloaded footage from one of the cameras and showed it to the Silicon Valley chapter of the NAACP.
"This is actually film from the gun? See, this is more accountability. That's what it does -- more accountability. Not only does it protect the citizens, but it protects the officers from false accusations," Callender said.
The TASER CAM records about 1.5 hours of audio and MPEG-4 video at 10 frames per second in QVGA format (320 x 240).
"It will definitely bring justice and comfort," Perez said.
The San Jose Police Department is testing 15 of the TASER CAMS, to see if it will equip all its officers with them.
"It just gives us another piece of evidence when the people go to court. It's a win for the officers because they're able to depict what they're actually confronting out there," said San Jose Police Chief Rob Davis.
Davis said that before his department permanently uses the gun, they want to determine the effectiveness of the new TASER CAMS, including their weight and battery life.
According to coroners, stun guns have contributed to a suspect's death, but never been considered the sole cause of death.
Many police departments claim most of the suspects who die after being stunned usually have a history of drug use or heart problems.

In related news, the NAACP has thrown it's support behind the concept of a less lethal shotgun that shoots jelly doughnuts.

They quickly recanted that view when dozens of shots were fired at a fat guy who ended up injesting the projectiles and later died of clogged arteries.

The NAACP is planning to sue on behalf of the Lardass family.

Id love to see one of those NAACP lawyers deal with some ass whos high on meth or crack

Well if the we would just leave the crack addict to come down off of his high... I mean, just leave your business card in the area, and when the dumb-shit comes down, I'm sure he'll be happy to turn himself in. Do these cocksuckers realize that all of us that carry Taser's have been Tased ourselves first? While it wasn't particularly joyful, it didn't kill me.

So let me soo if I understand this correctly. They will give you a loaded gun, THAT WILL KILL someoneand thats ok, but to use a weapon that in 99.9% of the y cases doesn't is wrong. I love my country, but we have allowed too many morones to express their feelings on these matters. Taxes pay the police to do their job, so let them, and if they can do it using a less leathal weapon, the let them, and if someone wants to sue them for this, then they have no right ot call the police for help for anything.

I think to be fair... all lawyers should be tased as well, that way they can testify to exactly how it feels
