Just curious as to what other officers think. I work for a moderate size city that has about 50 homicides a year. (compare it to Springfield). We have a new chief from a small town who now works for the mayor who was our chief before being elected. (see where this is going?) During our recent crime wave of 7 homicides in 6 days they have decided that the Police officers arent doing their jobs. So here is how they plan to fix it........
1.) All investigators will be on 8 hr walking posts in uniform. (all investigations will sit in a pile for 60 days).

2.) Every officer will be on a walking post for 45 minutes each shift.

The only problem is that we are MANDATED to walk alone. "It would send the wrong perception to the community for us to walk two officers together". We are being asked to put ourselves in harms way just by putting our uniforms on every day and now we are being MANDATED to go against everything we were trained to doas far as officer safety goes.To put on a "smoke and mirrors show" that there are more officers on the street. By the way did I say we have been 100 officers understaffed for years?

Sounds like they are implementing community policing strategies without buy-in from the rank and file or explaining precisely what the expected outcomes of this new strategy are. Like any other plan, without buy-in from the troops, it just isn't going to work! I'll bet if you dig a little deeper, the thought behind the investigators hitting the pavement, so to speak, is to figure out why the spike in homicides, who is responsible, etc. I doubt seriously it is a punishment for "not doing their jobs". If it is a punishment....what a collossal waste of time and resources. As for the officer safety aspect, has there been a history of assaults on police officers? How close in proximity and response time is the nearest back-up? My only advice would be don't play hero...call for back-up before jumping into something with both feet. The concept of getting out of the cars and connecting with the neighborhood has proven to be successful in many instances. You'd be surprised how much people are willing to tell you once they get to know you. The trouble is, if the cops don't want to be out there on foot, they are not going to make any connections.
