NEW YORK -- A man freed by a judge after spending 14 years in prison for murder filed a $50 million lawsuit against New York City, claiming that authorities mishandled dozens of cases and failed to train and supervise prosecutors.
Olmado Hidalgo filed the lawsuit on Monday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, seeking damages for false arrest, malicious prosecution and false imprisonment. He was freed last year after a judge found that he was unconnected to anyone involved in the 1990 death of Palladium nightclub bouncer Marcus Peterson.
The lawsuit claims the lead police investigator of the shooting and the case prosecutor both ignored evidence that contradicted their theory of the crime.
Hidalgo, who is now in his 40s and has returned to his native Dominican Republic, also claims prosecutors did not keep records that might have proven that he was not guilty.
The lawsuit cites 27 other cases that it says reflect similar misconduct, and it suggests some problems were due to insufficient training, supervising and disciplining of prosecutors.
Hidalgo's lawyer -- Irving Cohen -- said there's a pattern of wanting to clear cases as quickly as possible.
A spokeswoman for Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau declined to comment on the lawsuit.
A police spokesman would not comment because of the pending litigation.
