Anyone familiar with Somerville Auxiliary? I recently went and spoke with the recruiter, I'll be applying Tuesday evening. Is it a good department? Recieve good experience. Please respond.
Thanks Matt

I was an Aux there in the early 90's.It was an excellent department. Very professional.
I left due to the poor relationship between the regular cops and the Auxiliaries.
I have no idea what it is like now. Just after I left they changed the Auxiliaries uniform from the traditional blue to gray.

The department mainly consists of younger guys looking to gain experience. When I was on, there were so many members that most nights there would be three guys in a car which looked kind of stupid.

I understand they now have a bike unit. After a year you can apply to carry a firearm. There are not many armed departments these days.

I would have to say, it is one of the best units in the state along with Waltham and Wayland.

Three aux cops in a police car with no guns? Not bashing just asking?

I was there in 2004 for a bit. Had to leave as it didn't work with my other jobs. There are only 2 to a car and one is always armed (sergeant or above). There are a few aux officers lurking around here still on the board. I'm sure some will chime in

I'm good friends with a few SAPD guys...they love it there. Seems to be a good program. Yes, some of them are unarmed. From what I understood from them telling me, their car goes out w/ at least an Aux. Sgt. or above (who are all armed). They're not sworn-officers and they don't get paid details. But they sure do a lot of functions, parades, etc. Check out their website that Kozmo posted a link to...it's a wealth of information regarding the program.

WALTHAM'S #1; Officers receive more training than regulars on a constant basis. Its hard to believe but true. The Sgt. who runs it is also probably one of the most knowledgeable people you will ever encounter in law enforcement.

And why do i have a strange feeling that Dodge is a Waltham Auxie?

anyone have any input on campbridge aux pd?

Armed but no law enforcement status = Disaster in the making.

how many people are they looking for? Is it anywhere rear a T station? I just get bad vibes when it comes to driving in the city. thanks for any info

The Somerville Police station is located in Union Square. It is not that far from Sullivan Square and there is a bus that runs regularly from Sullivan. They do let you park in the lot. If you have a car I would recommend driving.

Being a graduate of the Waltham R/I Academy. I second that Comment. Whole heartedly. Everyone that does any training in that department Is a huge wealth of knowledge.

Yup

But to be real here we make sure that whackers are gone before they get through the interviews. and if we do have any that are on we make sure they get moved along to somewhere better. We've worked too hard recently to make a good name for ourselves in the department. Personally I've done alot of that work and I don't want anyone shitting allover what I've done and been doing. All it takes is one ass to make a bad name for a good unit. Wether it be an Auxiliary unit, Full-time Unit, MSP, any of them.

Looking at the web site SAPD website it looked pretty squard away till I saw that they drive a MARKED unit and saw that they have NO powers but can carry weapons after a year. Now I would NEVER bash aux police, and certainly not the SAPD, I don't forget where I came from. I started as an aux, I guess I don't understand not giving them powers and not arming them right off the bat, makes no sence. Most of the aux units I knwo if you go to the R/I academy, graduate and have Police Powers and are armed and have some type of FTO. I have seen a few that have this no powers and no guns and just never understood it. Xyr_gt if I were you I would look at Whitman, Randolph, Abington, Rockland and other places on the South Shore.
