calling ICE recruiter agents?

Hey folks. I'm new to the board, so if this is the wrong place for such a post, I apologize. But, it seemed the best place to start...

I'm interested in learning more about working for ICE. While browsing their site, I noticed that they didn't post Special Agent jobs, but advised interested parties to call their local Agent in charge of recruitment.

Now, I'm not naive enough to believe that I'm just gonna call and they'll become instantly enamoured with me and offer me a job right there. However, I'd still like to make a good impression on whoever I speak with, if only to find out when they might next anticipate openings, or what I might do to become a more attractive candidate sometime down the line. But, honestly, I'm not sure what to expect when I call.

So, I wonder if anyone here has made such a call to their local agent in charge of recruiting? How did it go? It it a casual conversation? A strightforward Q&A? A heads-up on the next job fair? Do they go from a set list of qualifying questions right off, or send you info packets? If they dismiss you out of hand, will they be receptive to requests for advice on how to improve your chances months or even years down the road?

I guess, ultimately, I just need to dial the damn number and ask to speak with someone. Normally, doing such a thing wouldn't phase me, but I feel oddly nervous about it this time. So any sort of insight from you fine folks would be greatly appreciated.

I realize I might not be anything they're looking for, as my LE experience is currently limited, but I'm willing to make it a long term goal. Guess I won't know till I just do it, eh?

Again, thanks for any help or advise you might be able to provide!

regards,
jb10

Now I could be wrong, but I believe they don't just go around posting special agent positions. Usually positions of that nature are selected from persons with years of law enforcement experience.

Go to www.OPM.GOV and see what is available for 1811 jobs.

Yeah, that's what I had always assumed, but two different friends, one stright out of an undergrad program, and another fresh from her Masters, both just got picked up rather suddenly by federal agencies (CIA analyst and DS Special Agent, respectively). The one for DS told me the first part of her training was alongside ICE recruits, and she had great things to say about all of them. And, they informed her, they're hiring like mad right now. Whether this is true right now, or only true for certain areas of the country, or what, I have no idea. But, while I have no real expectations, I figure why the heck don't I just toss my hat in the ring. We shall see...

Anyway, thanks for the heads-up. I reckon I'll just call up next week and see how it goes. I'll post back here so folks will know what to expect should anyone else come asking the same questions...

Hmm, will do. Thanks for the advice!

Also, one more call for assistance: anyone out there ICE agents or employees. or has anyone cold-called recruiters? If so, ANY advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, y'all.

You wont find the Special Agent position for ICE posted on OPM.gov. You need to call the ICE field office in your region and ask to speak to the recruiter. They will set you up with an exam and then you go from there. ICE is hiring alot now but it is an extremely competitive, drawn out process. And as with all federal agencies, be prepared to move far away at your own cost. Best of luck.

Hey, just an update. I did call the Boston recruiter number, and got a recording stating that hiring was on hold, but they'd be interested in talking to potential recuits mid-2007. Just an FYI.
