Senator's Comments About Iraq, Troops Draw Criticism
BOSTON -- The mother of a local Marine who was killed in Iraq spoke out Tuesday about the comments that Sen. John Kerry made about U.S. troops and education.
NewsCenter 5's Jim Boyd reported Tuesday that while talking to a group of students in California, Kerry urged them to study hard or else they can "get stuck in Iraq."
"I am very disturbed. I am very insulted and very sad that he doesn't understand how highly educated and well trained our military men and women are," said Debra Booth, whose son was killed in Iraq.
Second Lt. Joshua Booth died on Oct. 17. His mother said that what makes Kerry's words so offensive is that they come one day after Kerry called the family to offer condolences.
"We did appreciate the call. I am appreciative of anyone who reaches out to me and to then turn around and say something that is so totally incorrect," Booth said.
As to whether Kerry should apologize, Booth said that Kerry needs to do more to make amends.
"In addition to apologizing, he needs to learn a little bit about what our men and women in the military are actually made up of," Booth said. "We don't want to send that kind of signal, that you only go into the military if you are not good at anything."

True to form, Kerry blames others for gaffe By Joe Fitzgerald Boston Herald Columnist
Wednesday, November 1, 2006 - Updated: 04:34 AM EST
The most amazing thing about John Kerry is that anyone withhalf a brain would still take him half as seriously as he obviously takes himself. If he’s not putting his foot in his mouth, he’s attempting to extract it, as he is again this morning, trying to blame everyone but himself for his outrageous defamation of America’s fighting forces, slurring them as unproficient, shallow-minded cannon fodder.
Appearing in California to ostensibly assist Phil Angelides, a Democratic candidate for governor, Kerry warmed up by suggesting George W. Bush used to live in Texas, “but now lives in a state of denial.”
Whatever happened to that American ideal of “the loyal opposition,” especially when the country is at war?
Is common decency too much to expect from Kerry? Or have the fires of his insatiable ambition consumed his common sense as well?
He has no one but himself to blame for this latest fiasco, which was pure blasphemy born of bitterness over losing to Bush in 2004.
Addressing students at Pasadena City College, he said, “You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”
Stuck with whom, Senator? All those losers, rejects and unenlightened simpletons who left their homes and loved ones not because of any sense of duty and honor, but because they screwed up in the classroom? Was that your point, senator?
The only one who screwed up here was Kerry, who’d be well-advised to do the right thing and admit it.
Humility, however, is not his strong suit.
So when he subsequently realized the implications of trashingour troops, he reverted to form and lashed out at his critics, blaming them for wounds that were self-inflicted.
“I’m sick and tired of these despicable Republican attacks that always seem to come from those who never can be found to serve in war, but love to attack those who did,” he fumed, wrapping himself in the flag by alluding to his military experience.
But one of those “despicable Republicans” was Sen. John McCain, who spent more than five years as a POW in Vietnam.
The indignant McCain insisted Kerry “owes an apology to the many thousands of Americans serving in Iraq who answered their country’s call because they are patriots and not because of any deficiencies in their education.”
McCain, it should be noted, graduated from Annapolis, so it wasn’t as if he was captured for being a dumbbell.
If anyone ought to bridle at such a suggestion, it’s Kerry, the Yale man who saw combat: “I’m John Kerry, and I’m reporting for duty!” Remember?
Figuratively, what he ought to do this morning is report to the principal’s office for his boorish behavior.
It’s bad enough our troops have to hear disgruntled countrymen calling them invaders, occupiers, aggressors, murderers and terrorists; must they hear a senator hint that they’re imbeciles, too?
Of course, if he’s looking for sympathy, he could always call Hillary Clinton, telling how he, too, has now become the victim of a vast right-wing conspiracy. But since he’s so hot on education, it says here, Kerry would do himself a favor by turning this into a learning experience, heeding the advice of yet another Republican, Abe Lincoln: “It’s better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.”

His camp is saying this is what he was supposed to say: Kerry was supposed to say, "I can't overstress the importance of a great education. Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq."
Which is sort of funny on many levels: It then insults all elected officials that voted for the war, which then is him...which is funny as his grades at Yale were just about as suck as Bush's.
He could then change the punch line: Kerry was supposed to say, "I can't overstress the importance of a great education. Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting the Democratic party stuck in a political firestorm because you can't deliver a dumb joke."
I am in no way a Kerry fan, but I do know what he ment by his statement he just said it stupidly (like just about everything else he says).

Evidently he actually meant somthing other than what it seems.
I thought he really meant that poor kids and dumb kids end up in the Army for lack of choices...and that would maybe be true if there were a DRAFT...as in if you are rich (in college and connected) or "smart" (in college) you would get deferals like Clintoon.
He really means, if you voted for the war in Iraq, you are a dumb ass, in turn calling himself a dumb ass...maybe not a bad point.

Kerry Apologizes, Calls Remarks a 'Botched Joke'
By William Branigin Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, November 1, 2006; 1:54 PM
Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) apologized today for what he said was a "botched joke" that was interpreted as an insult to U.S. troops, and he canceled campaign appearances with Democratic candidates in three states to avoid becoming a "distraction" six days before crucial midterm elections.
While saying he was sorry for what he called a "small gaffe" in remarks at a campaign event in California Monday, Kerry, the 2004 Democratic candidate for president, denied that he meant any disrespect to members of the armed forces, and he insisted that President Bush and other leaders of his Republican administration are the ones who should apologize to the American people and U.S. troops for getting them mired in Iraq.
With Kerry's remarks Monday still reverberating, Republicans renewed their attacks on him today, and some Democrats sought to distance themselves from the party's former standard-bearer. Kerry announced he would return to Washington from campaigning on behalf of fellow Democrats, canceling appearances in Minnesota and Pennsylvania today and in Iowa tomorrow.
Republican candidates in several states sought to capitalize on the remarks, demanding that their opponents repudiate them.
At a campaign appearance in Georgia yesterday, Bush said Kerry owes U.S. troops an apology and called the senator's comments "insulting" and "shameful."
Kerry's office today released the text of his remarks as prepared for delivery at a campaign appearance in Pasadena for Phil Angelides, the Democratic candidate running for governor of California against Arnold Schwarzenegger. According to
Kerry's camp, the gaffe occurred when he departed from the prepared text, as he often has done in the past when delivering speeches.
The text had Kerry starting out with a couple of jokes about Republicans and Bush: "You know, yesterday we turned the clock back an hour. Actually just Democrats did. Republicans keep trying to turn back the clock to 1958."
That was followed by, "Yesterday I was in President Bush's home state of Texas. He no longer lives there. Now he lives in the state of denial."
The text continued: "It's great to be here with college students. I can't overstress the importance of a great education. Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush."
The prepared remarks then had Kerry saying, "But in all seriousness, you know, California has the 6th largest economy in the world -- larger than most nations. It is vitally important to our success as a nation. And the future of California lies with the innovations, expertise, and achievements of our young people."
Instead of delivering the lines as written, Kerry said after the "state of denial" remark: "You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."
Bush and other Republicans publicly interpreted the remarks as meaning that if young people are not smart and do not go to college, they could end up being soldiers in Iraq. Bush drove home that point before a GOP audience in Georgia yesterday, saying, "The members of the United States military are plenty smart and they are plenty brave, and the senator from Massachusetts owes them an apology."

Kerry's '72 campaign comments on Army mirror latest flap By JOHN SOLOMON Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) -- During a Vietnam-era run for Congress three decades ago, John Kerry said he opposed a volunteer Army because it would be dominated by the underprivileged, be less accountable and be more prone to "the perpetuation of war crimes." Kerry, a decorated Vietnam veteran who turned against the war, made the observations in answers to a 1972 candidate questionnaire from a Massachusetts peace group. After Kerry caused a firestorm this week with what he termed a botched campaign joke that Republicans said insulted current soldiers, The Associated Press was alerted to the historical comments by a former law enforcement official who monitored 1970s anti-war activities. Kerry apologized Wednesday for the 2006 campaign trail gaffe that some took as suggesting U.S. soldiers fighting in Iraq were undereducated. He contended the remark was aimed at Bush, not the soldiers.
In 1972, as he ran for the House, he was less apologetic in his comments about the merits of a volunteer army. He declared in the questionnaire that he opposed the draft but considered a volunteer army "a greater anathema." "I am convinced a volunteer army would be an army of the poor and the black and the brown," Kerry wrote. "We must not repeat the travesty of the inequities present during Vietnam. I also fear having a professional army that views the perpetuation of war crimes as simply 'doing its job.' "Equally as important, a volunteer army with our present constitutional crisis takes accountability away from the president and put the people further from control over military activities," he wrote. Kerry's spokesman, David Wade, said Wednesday the historical document needed to be viewed in the era in which it was written but that it nonetheless raised a "bedrock question in a time of war when sacrifice should be shared by all Americans." "These are the words 34 years ago of a 28-year-old veteran home from a war gone wrong, wondering who in America will bear the cost of battle and shoulder the responsibility of military service," Wade said. Kerry filled out the candidate questionnaire at the request of Massachusetts Political Action for Peace, an anti-war group that decades later turned over its historical documents to university researchers. AP obtained the document from someone who gathered it from archives during Kerry's unsuccessful 2004 presidential campaign against President Bush. Republicans in that election relentlessly assailed Kerry's role in the anti-war movement decades earlier. Kerry and Bush renewed their rivalry again this week, with the president accusing Kerry of offending troops. Kerry said he botched the text of a joke and didn't mean to insult troops. On Wednesday, Kerry canceled campaign appearance on behalf of Democratic congressional candidates and issued an apology.
Me? I voted for Ray Shamie...I voted for Bill Weld.
Massachusetts...the Embarrassed State.
Seven more years...then I retire, move to a real state (NH) and spend my retirement pay from MA to enrich the economy in another state: hopefully Deval will fix your economy with a "five-year" plan. I reckon he'll be as successful as Bresznev was...

Kerry tries to say it was a joke gone bad...maybe he should register on this site and look at the thread about hearing good jokes lately....obviously he is a moron...too not apologize right away and admit a mistake is the sign of someone who thinks he is above everyone else...it is also something that a kid would do..be a man and admit you screwed up!!!!
As Dick Cheney said, "first he was for the joke, and then he was against the joke." Once again, he can't make up his mind!!!
