The discount Fung Wah bus company yesterday got smacked with a $31,110 fine for violating safety regulations linked to last month’s Auburn bus rollover that injured 48 passangers.
The Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration said Fung Wah, which offers cheap round-trip rides between Boston and New York, improperly hired drivers who couldn’t speak English and who regularly broke speed limits.
Both regulations were violated in the Sept. 5 bus wreck, as well as previous bus rides reviewed by federal officials, the agency said yesterday.

“Motor coach operators must ensure that their operations are safe and their drivers are reliable,” said FMCSA administrator John H. Hill, in announcing the $31,110 fine, considered high by industry standards.
In May, the agency fined Fung Wah $12,950 for speeding and failure to maintain proper driver records.
Yesterday, state regulators and Fung Wah met to go over development and implementation of a comprehensive safety plan for the long-troubled bus service. A final plan is expected to be finished by tomorrow.
Last month, Fung Wah agreed to implement reforms - as well as allow routine inspections - in order to keep operations going in the wake of the Auburn accident.
Joe Mokrisky, a transportation safety consultant hired by Fung Wah at the urging of regulators, said yesterday he’s “quite confident” a comprehensive safety program will be in place soon.
He said the Auburn accident, which followed previous accidents and mishaps by Fung Wah, was “unfortunate” but will lead to positive changes.
