DEERFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS (WWLP) - There was a freak accident Sunday morning on a desolate road in Deerfield when a motorcycle joy ride turned tragic. Punishing winds toppled a tree, killing a Springfield resident, husband and father, as he was riding by. Menacing winds in western Massachusetts claimed the life of an avid motorcyclist in Deerfield. A mammoth tree snapped and killed Bob Sheehan of Springfield. He was with two friends and longtime riders. Zeke Desrosiers of Chicopee said "I was leading the three of us, heading north and I heard a loud noise behind me." Stephen Kowal, a fellow rider couldn't believe what happened, "I looked in the rear view mirror, I saw the tree down, I saw no headlights saw no Bob, and stopped. I started yelling, screaming his name, ran over and saw the bike and saw Bob, started pulling branches, yelling his name, there was no response." Witnesses who were traveling behind the three motorcycles, on Mill Village Road, said a huge gust of wind came by and knocked the massive tree on top of the victim. Ellenor Tennyson, a witness stated "I feel sad for his family and friends I'm very upset and shaken about seeing something like that." Rescue crews responded around 11:00 Sunday morning, performing CPR, trying to resuscitate Sheehan, but to no avail. Zeke Desrosiers had been riding with Sheehan for twenty years -- filled with fond memories, but never experiencing tragedy of this magnitude. "We were going to take a short ride; I chose this road because it's quiet and no traffic," continued Desrosiers. "Unbelievable, just a bunch of friends get together for a ride and a freak thing like this happens," said Kowal.
