A massive manhunt was launched throughout Northern California for a gunman who fatally shot a Sacramento County sheriff's deputy early Friday during a traffic stop in a rural area. Authorities said Jeff Mitchell, 38 and a 9-year veteran with the department, had died of his wounds at UC Davis Medical Center. He was married and had a 6-year-old son. At news conference, Sheriff John McGinness said Mitchell had sent a computer message saying he was okay shortly after stopping a white van without plates. However when officers arrived to assist 20 minutes later, Mitchell was found on the ground, weapon drawn with a mortal wound. "He was truly an officer and a gentleman," McGinness said. "This is a dark day for the sheriff's department...There will be a time to mourn, but right now we have to find the person or persons who are responsible for this…They are still at large." A perimeter was set up quickly by several law enforcement agencies after the shooting leading authorities to believe the suspect was still in the area. Dispatchers said the traffic stop took place around 3 a.m. near Sloughhouse in rural Sacramento County.
Sheriff's deputies, Elk Grove police and the California Highway Patrol were searching for a male suspect believed to have fled in a white Chevy van with no plates and possible damage to the front end.
