Eleven pounds of heroin that was hidden under the hood of a car was confiscated, authorities announced Wednesday. The value of the drugs was more than $1 million, NBC 4's Mike Bowersock reported. The bust occurred last weekend at a home and garage located along Sullivant Avenue, authorities said. Jesus Canela-Urena was stopped in St. Louis on Friday with his wife and 6-year-old child in the car, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency. The DEA said they made a deal with him to continue the deal in order to catch his associates so that his wife would be left out of it. Canela-Urena came to Columbus and met up with Manuel deJesus Gonzalez-Torres and Juan Carlos Huerta-Dominquez, who were both in the United States illegally, authorities said. They were arrested while in the Sullivant Avenue garage while taking the car's engine apart, Bowersock reported. "The engine had been completely rebuilt," said Anthony Marotta, a DEA agent. "There was a special hiding place right inside the manifold. That's where they found the heroin." Marotta said the suspects dropped panels off down by the car's exhaust system, by the intake manifold, and hid the wrapped bundles. "When we took hold of (the drugs), they had the smell of oil and gasoline," Marotta said. The three could face 10 years to life in prison, authorities said. "Hopefully it will take some type of dent out of the local consumer (drug) level, but I don't think so," Marotta said. Stay with NBC 4 and nbc4i.com for additional information.
