Assault suspect holds off cops for 3 hours

WHITMAN - A Whitman man who police said assaulted a neighbor with a knife and held her captive was at the center of a three-hour standoff last night on Linden Street.
James Reed, 60, went into the woman’s second-floor apartment in the triple-decker where they both live, locking the door behind him, and assaulted her with a knife, refusing to let her leave, Police Chief Edward Slocum said.
She was able to fight him off, escape and call the police. Slocum said the woman was not seriously hurt and did not require medical treatment.
Police found Reed barricaded in his third-floor apartment at 16-17 Linden St. at about 7 p.m. Officers could see him seated in a chair near a front window holding a knife, Slocum said.
‘‘He threatened to harm himself if anyone was to enter,’’ the chief said.
Whitman police tried to coax Reed out, talking to him from a porch for an hour.
A State Police negotiator relieved local police, talking with Reed, who named friends and acquaintances he wanted to speak with. One of them arrived at about 10 p.m. She said she didn’t know why Reed wanted to talk to her.
Less than 20 minutes later, a flash and loud bang emanated from the darkened third floor, causing gasps and cries and even some applause from 100 residents gathered behind yellow tape along South Street.
