Oct 11, 2006 1:33 pm US/EasternChoking Cop Saved By Fellow Officer In New Bedford

(CBS4) NEW BEDFORD A New Bedford police officer nearly choked to death on a snack chip this weekend. Fortunately another officer jumped into action, performed the Heimlich maneuvre and saved the cop's life.

Officer Joshua Fernandes was eating snack chips at the New Bedford Police Station on Sunday when he sneezed and a chip lodged itself in his throat. Fernandes was unable to breath or call out for help.

Officer William Sauve walked into the room and noticed Fernandes was in trouble. Sauve quickly shouted for help as he rushed over to Fernandes. Sauve applied the Heimlich maneuver and successfully dislodged the chip.

Fernandes fully recovered. New Bedford Police issued a statement commending the quick reaction by Sauve.
