Women Accused Of Stealing Thousands In Merchandise

STONINGTON, Conn. -- Thousands of dollars of stolen merchandise was uncovered in Stonington after police said they tracked it online.

Police said two women whose identities have yet to be released stole thousands of dollars of goods in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

The stolen merchandise includes purses, bath products and clothing.

The women then sold the items on eBay, an Internet auction site, according to police.

In August, a shopkeeper in Old Mystic Village realized that her store was being targeted by shoplifters.

"Another female was wheeling a baby carriage through the village and helping herself to items and then selling them on eBay," Detective Joseph Coco said.

The Internet auction site assisted the Stonington Police Department in identifying one seller from Griswold, police said.

Police said they went to the Griswold woman's home with a warrant and the woman gave up the name of another woman in Lisbon.

The total value of the stolen merchandise equals more than $36,000, according to Coco.

"They would go out several times a week and restock their inventory," Coco said.

Police are working with the New London state attorney's office to obtain arrest warrants for the two women.

The women could face larceny charges. Police are cataloguing the stolen merchandise and tracking it back to the shops it came from.
