State has dispatch postings on the HRD website...all they ask for is a copy of your resume...what happens after that? Do they send you an application packet? Anyone know what their procedure is after you send in your resume?
Thanks,
TJ

Yup I can tell you what they do. They look at your resume and see what politician put in a good word for you. I know well qualified people who put in for this job and never hear a word.

As of January, MSP dispatch hiring was absolutetly not political.

Yup, I can tell you what happens. If you are lucky you will get a call for an interview in three to four months from the time you send in your resume. If they decide not to grant you an interview, you will hear absolutely nothing from them. And I can say that it is not all policticallly based, I was hired and worked for them for four years and I have no strong conections to anyone.

And as to the post about some well qualified people not getting an interview I can only say that to me it always seemed that they like to hire people without a ton of dispatch experience sometimes. Things are done a lot different at MSP and sometimes I think they feel it easier to train new people rather than retrain people from their way of doing things.

The hiring process is actually alot quicker nowadays. I was hired 7+ years ago with absolutely zero political connections and minimal emergency dispatch experience. I do know there have been some nepotism hires, some good, some bad, as with anywhere. No place is immune to that.
( I did witness a political hire last about 16 work hours, after all that political pull, and he went running back to Home Depot!)

Framingham is "cell hell" where the main function is answer and transfer. It's not just calls to the barracks - alot of calls go to locals, with more and more cell phones taking over common sense.

Middleboro, Danvers and Southie are troop dispatch. Southies' shift is a mid shift, and the person will be there for a while. No whining, wackers, nor wannabees please. Dispatch is not a stepping stone to trooperdom and will not get you into the academy sooner. I'm not sure what shift the other troops' vacancies are.

Bravo was right - MSP would rather train a newbie from nothing than try to retrain an experienced "This is how WE did it at _______ PD" kind of person.
We did luck out quite nicely with our last two hires, knew what they were doing already and play nice in the sand box.

Best of luck!

I sent in my resume and hoping for the best .. i have 6 months dispatching eperience i know its not much at all but willing to learn ..... just wondering if anyone has any advice

Posted by: mtc

Hockeypuck practice your typing, and remember what you do not know, you do not know. DO NOT FILL IN THE BLANKS !!

If you get to the interview / testing stage, you'll know why.

Best of luck!

"Cell Hell" is the proper term for it, and as I said I did my four years in it. That being said right before I left it did get a bit better with the new system. I haven't asked my old colleagues how's it been going with this system. (I start to have flashbacks when I do) Mtc is also right about it not being a stepping stone, I used it as such, but working there does not mean you get an automatic slot at New Braintree. Everyone who left the job during my tenure there to move on and become a cop, myself included, went to a different department.

All that being said, it was a good place to work, you just have to decide early what you are going to do with it.

How many people typically apply for these positions. I personally applied for the middleborough slot(s), just curious as to how many might put in for each position i guess???

Posted by: mtc

It's seems to run feast or famine.... I now know of 3 of you that applied. HR does a pretty good job of weedling through the applicants.
There were a total of 5 positions posted, so hopefully, plenty of people applied.

The last slot we filled in Southie saw probably about 6 - 9 interviewees I think.

Posted by: VTCOP

thats a good few, not too many. What are the bene's like, pay scale, stuff like that?

Posted by: mtc

Resumes are being reviewed by HR - good luck to all that applied.

Posted by: VTCOP

Got the post card/letter. Again I ask, anyone have insight on what the bene's are??

Posted by: hockeyman4

what did the car/letter say ???

You get paid every other week.
Deferred comp plan
State retirement.
Medical isn't too bad.
Dental and vision through the union is pretty good. Once you're in the union.
optional life insurance.
3 PER days a year.
2 weeks vacation, 3 after 5 years, 4 after, um, 9yrs?

The usual.... no uniforms, no badges, no pull.... we're really nothing special.

Well, till you piss off a trooper.
Then you're REAL special!
I collect my complaints and put them on my fridge!!

Not anymore, unless they didn't change out west, we're all 4-n-2 now.

(That nasty little unfair labor practice thing got noticed - finally!)

I hate it, but at least it gets me off the Monday / Tuesday boredom quicker!

That's awesome, glad they finally fixed that. Being firmly entrenched in the 4-n-2 lifestyle now for 6 years (minus the 6 months of the academy of course, ya know it was nice having every weekend off, not to mention Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years []) I always thought is was unfair to have one place be 4-n-2 and not the others.

For now, I've been in for almost 10 years, and Im sick of the small town/state mentality. I need a break. I just started working full time for my sheriffs department, doing mostly transports, but some patrol...lot less stress. But we'll see. My wife is twisting my arm to get a job in mass, particularly near norton, middleborough, plymouth region. So, this is a good chance to get down there and try something different for a bit, or a while.

P.s. anyone lookign to buy in VT??? Were selling!

I'm going for my second interview next week....wish me luck! Hopefully it'll go as smoothly as it has been.

Posted by: hockeyman4

How did the interview go. Do you know when they will make the decision ?

Posted by: CHROMECOLT357

I'm sure someone can answer my question. Dose MSP have civillian dispatchers? At which barracks? Are there part time positions? How do you apply?

Posted by: DPDPO

The MSP dispatch positions are usually full time positions. They have dispatchers at all barracks. MSP Headquaters have a lot more dispatchers per shift for the 911 system. Check www.mass.gov for job postings or checks LEAPS if you have access to it.

Not to bust you stones Larry but Troopers dispatch themselves at B-1 and B-4. Not sure about anywhere else.

Posted by: Mikey682

Troopers work the desk at all the barracks I know of, other than Devens. We have regional 911 dispatch centers, like Northampton and Shelburne, which happen to be located in the same buildings as the barracks, but separate in operation and leadership. When a call for service comes in, the 911 center forwards the phone call to the barracks, where a trooper will dispatch a cruiser on the road to the call.

Posted by: Bravo2-7

Troopers at the Barracks.

Civilian Dispatchers at Middleboro, South Boston, Danvers, Framingham, Holden, Northampton, Shelburne Falls, and New Braintree. Framingham (GHQ), Middleboro, and Northampton do Wireless 911 (Middleboro and Northampton are troop dispatch as well), Shelburne and New Braintree do 911 for the local towns, the rest are troop dispatch.

Does anyone know if they have hired already for the Boston or Middleboro pocitions?
