Man Facing Charges He Set Wife's House On Fire
Mom, Teen Son Escape Unharmed
MARION, Mass. -- A Marion man will be in Wareham District court Tuesday afternoon, facing two attempted murder charges after he allegedly set fire to his wife's home overnight.
NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that Gina Sprague and her teenage son escaped unharmed, but their white clapboard colonial house went up in flames.
Sprague's estranged husband, William Sprague, 47, was arrested in some woods near the 760 Mill St. house, watching the blaze.
"There were two occupants of the house and fortunately they were able to get out safely. It could have been a very tragic situation," Marion Police Chief Lincoln Miller said.
Early Tuesday, police allege, William Sprague parked his minivan at a business down the street and set the family home and two vehicles on fire. Gina and her son were inside. Another son was not at home.
"Fire was showing from several areas of the building, plus the back," Marion Fire Chief Rick Guerzoni said.
Fire department crews from four other communities arrived to help quell the blaze.
Gina Sprague, who is separated from her husband, had a restraining order against him. Authorities said he spent time in prison for violating the restraining order.
Police crews arrested Sprague after search dogs located him in the woods.
"He was bunkered down behind a tree, basically in a passive mode. Just sitting there. As a matter of fact, he wouldn't get up. Wouldn't raise his hands and the officers had to go in and put handcuffs on him and do a four-man, carry him out of the wooded area," State Police Trooper Gary Mozuch said.
Friends said Sprague had promised them he was going to make his wife's life miserable.
