WESTWOOD -- After pitching a terrific game Tuesday night, Red Sox ace Curt Schilling pitched in by tipping the cops off to a suspected drunken driver on the way home from Fenway Park.
Police Lt. Leo Hoban said Schilling called police on his cell phone at about 11:30 p.m. while driving on High Street in Westwood. "He called and said he was behind a vehicle that went in the opposite lane," Hoban said.
Police caught up with Schilling, who then pointed out the vehicle, a white Ford Explorer, Hoban said.
Police followed the vehicle and saw the erratic driving for themselves, Hoban said. That was all they needed to pull the Explorer over.
Hoban said police performed field sobriety tests before arresting Charles Morris, 52, of 13 Ledgewood Drive, Dover, on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a license and committing a marked lanes violation.
Schilling had just helped the Red Sox to a 12-2 win over Oakland, striking out five batters. He was on his way home to Medfield when he saw the dangerous driving.
"He almost caused a couple of collisions," Schilling said yesterday at Fenway. "He was all over the road. I figured he was either very sick or impaired.
"Having kids, when you see something like that it scares you." While Hoban could not confirm that Morris had been at the game, he said the arresting officer noted the man was wearing assorted Red Sox gear.
Morris was released on $500 cash bail that night, and he is due in Dedham District Court at a later date. Hoban said it is unlikely Schilling will need to be called as a witness.

Its funny how so many young soldiers are dying in combat in Iraq, and many various news worthy incidents are occuring, but the Herald still puts Schilling on the front page because he calls in an OUI. People call in erratic operators and OUI's all the time, but does it make the paper, not to mention the front page?

I see your point, csauce, but how often do "celebrities" care enough to call in potential drunk drivers when so many of them are the ones crusing around wasted? That's what you usually hear about in the news when it comes to celebrities, sports figures, politicians, etc.

I agree with Dunny. By doing such a deed, Schilling proves a degree of a role model. Maybe others will be inspired by such a thing. We can only hope.

An accused drunken driver flummoxed by Red Sox ace Curt Schilling's curveball Tuesday night has been arrested three times and convicted twice before, authorities said.
Schilling was on his way home from Fenway Park after shutting down the Oakland A's, 12-2, on Tuesday night when he spotted a Ford Explorer weaving in and out of the baseline.
Schilling used his cellphone to signal the catcher . . . the Westwood P.D., that is. Let's listen to the play-by-play:
``The driver is obviously impaired. He's gone over the line three or four times . . . almost collided twice head-on with someone,'' Schilling is heard saying in a 911 tape obtained by WHDH-TV (Ch. 7).
``This guy has missed two head-ons by less than a foot already,'' Schilling said ``Oooooh . . . he just almost went off the road, almost hit somebody!''
A shortstop in Westwood blue caught up with Charles Morris, 52, of Dover, on High Street. Morris took a pass on the Breathalyzer. But his fielding tripped him up. He went back, back, back for the field sobriety test but didn't quite make it, according to police, who charged him with drunken driving.
The Registry of Motor Vehicles reports this was Morris' fourth drunken-driving at-bat. He struck out twice, with convictions in 1984 and 1998, and walked once, when he was arrested but not convicted in 1992. His license was expired at the time of his arrest Tuesday and has since been suspended, officials said.
Morris has not returned calls.
