ASHLAND -- Scott Rohmer admitted late last week he was getting a few butterflies in his stomach in anticipation of tonight’s ceremony to swear him in as the town’s top police officer, but he said he is excited for the job.

"My heart is with this community," said Rohmer, an Ashland native. "It’s going to be a great community event."

Officials have invited all to a selectmen’s meeting and ceremony scheduled for tonight, at 6:30, in The Warren Conference Center, 529 Chestnut St. Rohmer said he is honored to be recognized with the first formal police chief induction ceremony in town in several years.

"It’s been a wonderful progression with the department," Rohmer said of his more than 20-year law enforcement career in town. "I’m up for the challenge."

The event is geared toward not only honoring Rohmer, but also bringing the community together, Town Manager John Petrin said.

"We’re trying to show respect for the position," said selectmen Chairman Paul Monaco. "We’re hoping to make it a formal ceremony."

The event will include introductions and calling the Board of Selectmen to order for a meeting, in accordance with open meeting laws. Petrin is expected to announce Rohmer’s appointment to the board and request selectmen waive a 15-day review period, standard for any town manager appointment.

Once approved, Town Clerk Tara Ward will issue the oath of office to Rohmer, and he will be awarded his badge by the person of his choice, Petrin said. He will then speak to the crowd.

After the ceremony, there will be in informal gathering with crudites, passed hors d’oeuvres, dessert tables and a cash bar.

Rohmer will succeed former Police Chief Roy Melnick, who resigned July 1. Rohmer was acting chief since late May, when Melnick went on family medical leave, and was appointed interim chief in July.

Melnick was appointed during a selectmen’s meeting and received a badge during a private ceremony, selectmen Vice Chairman John Kirwan said. Officials are trying to return a sense of pomp to the proceedings.

"I expect the Warren Conference Center will have a really nice event," said Kirwan, whose father, also named John Kirwan, was appointed Medford’s police chief 35 years ago.

Officials recently honored Police Officer Greg Wildman, who last month was appointed sergeant at a first-ever pinning ceremony at the Community Center.

MetroWest police chiefs and elected regional and state officials will also be invited to the event, Petrin said. Rohmer said he has invited some people from the Middlesex district attorney’s office.

Rohmer said he is looking forward to chatting with everyone at the event.

"It’s always my goal as a police officer to identify with people," said Rohmer.

Anyone interested in attending tonight’s event should RSVP to Kristy Merhib, executive assistant, at 508-881-0100, ext. 611.
