Does anyone have any advice about the NYPD? I see the tests all around. What would be some pros/cons about working down there after working up here for about 1.5 years? Thanks!

Shitty pay at first, I read an article about some NYPD rookie cops who had to use food stamps.

After 5 years you make a good annual salary

Very good advancement opportunities

I'm not yet a police officer, I'm a senior in college working toward that goal. However, I did take the NYPD exam last November and as a result of that, I have done a fair amount of research on that agency.

The Pro's of it from my POV are the opportunity for advancement and the endless amount of possibilities as far as different divisions (Vice, detectives, k-9, SWAT, etc.) Also, their retirement plan offers optional retirement after 20 years on the job w/50% of pay.

Somethings I didn't like were that for working in NYC's high crime environment they only start you at about $35k/yr for the first yr and a half. Obviously thats nothing when compared to the cost of living in NYC. If you can scrape by for the first few years though, you can start to see some pretty good money w/promotions and what not. Also, I wasn't impressed with the way the department handled recruitment. All of the officers administering the test were really cool, but when you call down there to get any information about the letters they start sending you in the mail, you are transfered from some random office to another random office all over the city. I really had the feeling that I was talking to someone who was working out of their home. They were rude and seemed annoyed if you asked them a question. One of them actually yelled at me when I asked them why my spot on the list dropped a few spaces and asked me; "Does it really matter?" I thought so, but in the same token it isn't like it is around here where one spot on the list means the difference between getting the job because there are so few spots open.

In my opinion though, I think the experience of taking the test and preparing for it and going through some of the process with the NYPD was helpful to me and at the very least prepared me better for the MA civil service and anyother upcoming tests, and maybe even gives me something to fall back on b/c the list is good for 4-years. Not to mention the test was free so why not?

I also took the exam last year in Boston. I got letters to appear for the upcoming classes but was still in school. I just got another letter last week about the upcoming Jan. 07 class. Im going to now go through the selection process and hope to make the Jan. class. I feel that its a great opportunity to gain great experience. If im not happy after a few years then I'll leave and look around but now I will have experience and academy training under my belt. Its better then sitting around MA waiting for a civil service position for many years. The cons are pay, if you are just getting out of college and have no commitments then it could work for you. I can't imagine moving a family to NY and trying to survive on 30K a year. As long as you pass the exam you will have a chance, they need so many bodies. You dont have to score in the high 90's, just pass the exam and you will get called.

Agreed, passed the test last year. I have a few more months of school left, giving Civil Service one go, and if the Commonwealth doesn't pan out it's either West or to NY. Contingency plans are key! They keep sending notices to appear for the condensed testing for a while. I can't imagine the department is at its peak quality due to the recent pay cuts and hiring of just about anybody, but after a couple years you can specialize in so many different jobs and big department means oppurtunity for advancement. At least they don't make you live in the city. I'm sure you can save money by living in a surrounding county.

pbiddy and cadet, I was pretty much in the same boat as you guys, took a differal to finish school this year. I guess thats another perk they need so many people that you can tell them when you want to go through and not worry about missing your opportunity, plus the list is good for 4 years. cadet, def keep us posted on how the NYPD process is for ya and good luck.

All u guys that are finishing school are you guys gonna start higher ($$) with your degrees? I think that if you are a performer and squared away then u have a great chance for advancement. but i think you have to be young or have zero bills. I know i couldn't pack up and move a family of 4 (almost 5) to NYC. I just think if i was gonna move out of MA for a LE career there are just better places to go then the NYPD. of course i am a more of a country person than a city person.

I went through the whole process. If you are single with no bills, you can find an apartment and live with other recruits. I went through the process to start the jan 06 academy, then they lowered the pay. 25 grand to start as a recruit, then take out taxes. Then subtract rental fees, etc. Where are you left after that? If your answer is live outside the city, you still will pay high rent, but then you need a car. You could take the train but that is going to cost you as well. Still not done yet. How about bills such as electric, phone, and other utilities? Any money left yet???? If you have a car, where are you going to park? the precincts have limited parking depending on where you are assigned, otherwise pay high prices per month to park at a garage. Basically, my point is, if you can swing it, go for it. You are lucky if you can. And for those that want to use this as a stepping stone like i did, you may be disappointed. NYPD lately has not been releasing employment records, especially to PAPD. There is a lawsuit right now. A lot of members leave after 5 or so years and join surrounding depts that pay very high like nassau, westchester, papd etc. I wish I could swing it, I am still on the list and get mailings from them all the time. until the pay goes back, I cannot do it. By the way, the test is very similar to mass civil service, study a picture, answer a bunch of questions about the pic, then multiple choice. Just remember if you want this, 25 grand is about $12 and hour, about 480 a week before taxes, good luck.
