Does any one have info on this Department. I see that they are hiring. How many are the anticipating hiring. Are they planning on sending the new officers to the Boylston Academy? Any info would be great.

I went to school there. They had an officer patrolling the dormitories evenings. He was so bored that sometimes I would find him in my room playing darts.

UML has security that work in the dorms in the evening they are not police officers.

Posted by: DirtyHarry

That was a few years ago, but I'm fairly certain that was not security. It wasn't Umass at the time, it was the University of Lowell.

From what I hear the new Chief (former Salem State College Chief) is big on SSPO academy. I did that Lowell Academy would still accept student officers into academy however last 6-8 hires have been SSPO grads or have been sent to SSPO, even with MPTC running concurrent with SSPO. I HIGHLY doubt any new hire would make Boylston. State job, therefore takes a little longer than a normal job. You prob wont hear test results for about 3 weeks, which puts you into Mid to late Dec. Then backround, med pshyc PAT and all that fun stuff. Jan 29th start date is cutting close, plus I dont think MPTC accepts college cops anymore, thats why Lowell agreed to accept still, however I could be wrong.

Best of luck to those who take it

MPTC DOES accept college police officers from state schools. Both BSC and Salem State are currently sending officers to MPTC academies, not just MPTC recognized academies. However, for slots in those academies, preference typically goes to municipal officers.

UMass Lowell has a history of sending officers through an MPOC, but as previous posters have noted, the new Chief is big on the SSPO. UML had one graduate from the SSPO in the summer of 05, and some new hires have had the SSPO and not been required to go back to training. I do not know about new hires without any training, what academy they would be sent to.

I believe other posters have said that new Chief prefers the SSPA because there is a history of State and College recruits graduating from MPC and then leaving a short time later for a municipal job. Although the SSPA is shorter it cots more than the MPC academy. Maybe it covers the suites you get to lodge in.

I don't know how true it is, I have heard that as many as 35 states recognize the MSP special academy and will hire a graduates and not require them to a full academy

On another subject, I realize that the jobs agencies like the DMH and Public Health are glorified security jobs.. In another life, I was sent to the Lemuel Shattuck a lot ( it wasn't a big deal..3 to 5 days of R and R, new meds as then they would let me out), The guys at that facility spent a great deal of time BSing behind a large plate glass window.

I used to work out at the Lindermin Center (BTW, they have a nice gym, basketball court, machines, free weights and treadmills. It is free for state employees and if anyone goes in their in uniform they will most likely give you a a pass.
Everytime I go in there 3 or 4 DMH cops are just siting behind a desk signing people in.

There is a Sgt. job with the DPH. The money is a bit more than I make now and you get a better pension, holidays, sick time and Insurance.

Can anyone tell me anything else about the DPH "Police" Is there any room to grow.

Thanks
Thanks

That is acurate, after I went to the S.S.P.O and before the M.P.O.C I did the research and found most states will take you as a lateral with the S.S.P.O, I forget the exact states, had a list. What I did was I sent out the ciriculum breakdown to various M.P.O.C equivilants in other states. I almost did not go to the M.P.O.C because I was gonna fly the coup, but I ended up staying. Point is if you are going to the S.S.P.O but to be a city/town cop don't fret too much if you are willing to go out of state just stay the course. I think the S.S.P.O instuctors may have the states that take it, but I dare to say most out of 50 do.

I am curious, I know Umass does Ch 90, how does the chief justify his cops going the S.S.P.O if they don't do Ch 90, unless they do know?

Posted by: SouthSideCobras

The State Police now offer a three day in-service Chapter 90 class for all State and Community colleges. I believe they will be adding CH. 90 to all future SSPO classes due to the law change.

Nice, glad to hear it, thanks.

Do you know if they have Part-time officer or if they only hirer full time

Posted by: SSPO#11

We only have full-timers. No part-time police officers.

The only reason mass civil service doesn't accept the SSPO is cuz AS soon as you graduate and go to your respective post you will put in for a lateral to a civil service city or town.

Then the post you are working at will be left high and dry after sending you to SSPO.

I agree with Mongo, I think that from a Campus Police Chief's standpoint the SSPO Academy serves many of them well. The recruits get a pretty good training program but they don't acquire the means ( from a Mass full time certification standpoint ), to leave for a city or town.

Can an officer with mpoc academy working for a non civil service dept transfer to a civil service dept as a lateral transfer?

Simply put, no.

Posted by: new guy

Lateral is probably not the right choice of words, however the point is that Campus Police Officers that attend the SSPO academy have less of a means to jump ship to a city or town. I don't agree with it but that's just the way it is.

MASS CIVIL SERVICE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SSPO

I'm sure that's not the ONLY reason why civil service doesn't accept the SSPO....

The SSPO is not acceptable around here, but go to Florida and it is! Go figure.
