Greetings from Baghdad! I've got a question.

What's up everyone,

It's been a while since my last post. I don't know if any of you remember me, but I received a card from Sommerville PD back in June, 3 weeks before I was to deploy to Iraq. Luckily CS did the honorable thing and advised Sommerville to hold my spot until I got through my deployment.

Now for my question. I will be in Iraq until september of 07, however I've 15 days of leave coming up. Should I notify sommerville PD whilst on leave to try and complete additional paperwork, or should I wait till next year? I just don't want them to think I've lost intererst. Thanks in advance. In closing I'd like to say Baghdad sucks, Sadr city sucks more, and Red Sox rules.

Hey ProudAmerican. First off, THANK YOU for what you are doing and the sacrifices that you have and will make for this country. It is GREATLY APPRECIATED.

As far as the Somerville thing goes, I don't think they are going to let you start all the paperwork just yet. I mean, you have almost 1 year before your deployment runs out. Alot can happen in that time, like new budgets, new priorities etc. Thank God CS made them hold your spot. I would maybe touch base with them and let them know that you are still very much interested and can't wait to get back. With CS going to bat for you (which normally they might not), I would just try and keep them updated on your status etc.

Good Luck and most importantly STAY SAFE!!!

Thank you...we could be as safe, as a country, as we are right now, without you!

Regardless, what SoxRock said is probably a good bet. Give them a buzz, tell them what's going on. They'll appreciate the fact that you are keeping them informed!

Stay safe out there!

Proud American, make sure you save and document all paperwork and statements from the City of Somerville. You should also have someone as a liason for information from the city and to the city. Right now there is four people in an academy, and there is a process ongoing for four more.
We are also going through a bitter contract dispute and promotions from patrolman to Sgt. are frozen by the administration. Once that's cleared up there is a potential 5 patrolmen getting promoted, that and being the lowest in manpower since layoffs four years ago, there is a potential for more hires. Be aware that the City of Somerville has a lengthy history in civil service complaints.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Things are getting a little bit better. When we first got here our A.O averaged about 6 mortar attacks weekly. Now it's down to maybe 1 or 2 every other week. Our FOB still has us in full battle rattle when not inside the trailers, but we're working through it.

The Iraq heat's not that bad, though the two weeks we spent at Camp Beuhring Kuwait helped with the acclimation process. I friggin hate Kuwait, more-so than Iraq. At least I get to see trees in Baghdad. Kuwait looked like Mars, no trees, just miles of sand as far as the eye could see. Average temperature there was 130 degrees, in the shade.

The Iraqi people are generally friendly towards us, that is until you get to Sadr city. I stopped counting how many times we came under small arms fire patrolling the outskirsts of that place. What aggrevates us is the fact we're forced to fight a politically correct war in that area. The followers of @ssh0le Muqtada Al-Sadr are behind all the attacks. However said @ssh0le commands such great influence over the new Iraqi government we're forced to use the kiddy gloves on him.

We'll patrol the outskirts of Sadr city, but we're not allowed to go in the heart of it and really clear house. In the meantime our fellow bretherens are falling left and right at the hands of these scumbags. 13 soldiers died last week over a span of 3 days due to small arms fire.
