OAKLAND, Calif. -- A California man was charged with murder Thursday in the beating death of a woman he was dating.
Police searching the home of the Oakland, Calif., murder suspect said they found evidence that one homicide investigator described as "frightening even to us."
But police said Wednesday that what looked to be a normal house was not at all ordinary. The man who lived there, roofer Earl Stefanson, 41, allegedly turned the basement into a torture chamber that reminded police of the horror movie "Silence of the Lambs," according to The Oakland Tribune. In the movie, a serial killer tortured and murdered women in his basement.
Police arrested Stefanson after he led officers on a high-speed chase Tuesday night. Stefanson is suspected of beating his ex-girlfriend -- 36-year-old Leslie Lamb -- to death in late August.
Police said Stefanson killed Lamb on Aug. 26 and then dropped her body off at a hospital. Stefanson told hospital workers he had found the woman unconscious in a vehicle near his home.
But police said it appeared Lamb was beaten with a board.
"It is hard to believe what (Lamb) went through," Sgt. Tony Jones said. "They were despicable and sadistic acts that left her bruised from head to toe."
When police searched Stefanson's home this week, they found what they described as a basement torture chamber.
They said they also found traces of Lamb's blood and that of at least two other victims. Investigators are asking anyone who knows of any possible victims to come forward.
