NEW BEDFORD — History is literally taking flight in the Whaling City this week.
The Wings of Freedom, a special display of World War II aircraft, is landing at New Bedford Regional Airport tomorrow, giving people in the region the opportunity to see and take a flight in some of the most historic fighter planes in history.
"It's one thing to see them on the ground, but it's almost hard to describe how it feels being up in the air flying in one," said Hunter Chaney of Wings of Freedom.
Landing in New Bedford tomorrow are a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, North American B-25 Mitchell and a Consolidated B-24 Liberator, which Mr. Chaney said is the only operational one in the world.
Wings of Freedom is put on by the Collings Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the importance of history and education. The program travels across the country, bringing lessons in history textbooks to life in communities across the United States.
"It's an educational program showing what these planes are like and how they were used so we can enjoy the freedoms we have today," Mr. Chaney said, adding that one of the highlights of the program is seeing the veterans who fought in the war and flew the same planes tell their stories.
"We get a lot of veterans who come to see the planes. The stories they tell is amazing. It's an emotional time for these veterans."
The Wings of Freedom will be at the airport until Friday, with hours for tomorrow, 3-5 p.m.; Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is a $10 donation for walkthrough tours for adults and $5 for children under 12.
Reservations to take a flight on one of the historic planes can be made by calling (97 562-9182. Tax-deductible donations of $425 per person get a flight on the B-17 or B-24 and $325/$400 for the B-25.

I had friends that crewed both B-17's and 24's...but my favorite is the B-17! I'd pay for the ride but I'm working those days...and New Bedford is not exactly in the Berkshires (...hey...think they'll make a side trip to Westover or Barnes?!).
