Any Portsmouth officer can correct me on this one, but the title of Auxiliary Police Officer might be misleading to those of us from Massachusetts. Portsmouth APOs are part-time, sworn officers with the same authority as the full-timers.

Jon is right.
The Portsmouth, NH PD uses the job description of Auxiliary Police, but it is essentially the same job classification as those listed for part-time officers for the majority of NH cities and towns, and the requirements are the same.
You must satisfactorily pass the entry requirements before admittance to the NHPSTC part-time program, IE The Coopers Test, BI, driving history, etc.
Portsmouth, NH Police Patrol Division - Auxiliary Unit
Program Purpose
The Auxiliary unit is comprised of part-time officers utilized in several different venues in the department such as providing an expanded police presence at special events and working outside road details. Approximately half of the officers are retired Police Officers and the remaining participants have attended an abbreviated Police Academy through the NH Police Standards and Training Council and Portsmouth FTO program comparable to their part-time status and responsibilities.
Budget Summary
Primarily, the funding for this unit is utilized to train these officers and to provide church traffic control. These officers are also responsible for the biweekly meter collections and the Police Department is reimbursed from the city parking division for these hours (PD does not budget for the cost of this service). Since auxiliary officers are part-time, all hours spent in training must be paid. The slight increase in the salary/benefit line is the result of a COLA increase.
