A North Carolina man died when a car driving in the wrong lane hit a Cherokee County deputy's vehicle head-on late Monday night. According the Highway Patrol, the accident happened on Highway 18 near Interstate 85. Troopers said that a silver Mitsubishi passed another car on the two-lane road, but did not get back in its lane and hit Deputy Ronny Painter's car. Within minutes after the crash, Painter's car burst into flames. The driver of the Mitsubishi, Darrell D. Huskey, Jr., of Kingstown, N.C., was taken to Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney, where he died, the Cherokee County Coroner's Office said. Painter was taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and where he is recovering from his injuries. According to witnesses, Painter survived because two young men helped him get out of the car before it caught fire. "He might have died," one of the men, Shane Seals, told WYFF News 4's Latoya Silmon. "It wasn't two seconds after we got him out of the car, and the whole car went up in flames." Michael Crook, the other rescuer, said that Seals broke out the window of the deputy's car so that the two of them could pry the door open to get Painter out. Seals and Crook said that they don't consider themselves heroes. They were just doing what they'd want someone to do for them. The Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
