A motorist shot at an officer during a traffic stop Tuesday, officials told KPRC Local 2.
A Houston police officer stopped the driver of a sport utility vehicle on Finch Street near Hardy Street at about 3 a.m.
Police said the driver got out of his vehicle and fired several rounds at the officer.
"The driver of the vehicle got out, opened fire on the officers," Sgt. Mike McStravick said. "One of the officers then returned fire at the suspect."
Officials searched the area on the ground with a K-9 unit and by air in a helicopter for the driver.
The driver fled on foot, police said.
"At this point, we don't believe anyone was hit by the gunfire," McStravick said. "The officer is fine and we don't think the suspect was hit."
Officials said the driver was stopped because the vehicle's headlights were not on.
The vehicle was reported stolen, police said.
