Student mugged in dorm room
FITCHBURG — A Fitchburg State College student said he was robbed at knife point Monday in a dorm room, said police Sgt. Glenn C. Fossa.

The suspect is described as black, 19 to 23 years old and about 5 feet 10 inches tall, Sgt. Fossa said. The man was wearing black sweatpants, and demanded money from the male student, he said.

The incident occurred in
MaraVillage, a section of the dorms at Fitchburg State College, Sgt. Fossa said.

Michael V. Shanley, executive assistant to the president at
FitchburgState, said the incident remains under investigation by campus, city and state police. Nobody was injured, he said.

A person who the college assumes isn’t a student was able to enter the dormitory through a door left ajar by a student, Mr. Shanley said. As is typical on college campuses, students leave doors open when they step outside to smoke or allow a friend to come inside, he said.

Fitchburg State tries to educate students not to leave these doors open, but it does happen, he said.

The suspect entered the building and then went into a room and confronted the student about
7:30 p.m., Mr. Shanley said.

“There were reports of a knife being involved, but again, until the report is complete, that will not be confirmed,” he said.

No security cameras were in place, although the college has plans to begin installing some of the devices, a very expensive and time-consuming project, Mr. Shanley said. A study is being completed to establish the best places to install the cameras, he said.

I was a campus cop there for approx 3 years. In the time I was there the department made great strides in becoming as much like a municipal department as the college politics would allow. The guys who are currently working there are some of the best people I know. The pay sucks (the reason why i left) but as you can see from the above posted news article, we were always busy with more police work than most other college campuses. It is a good deaprtment. The pay is the only issue there (again, outside the normal college politics). PM me if you have any other questions.

Be safe.

We just hired 1 former employee and 1 current employee from there as reserve officers. I sat in on the interviews and we had a total of three from there apply. All were good guys. The bad thing about working there is you deal with the college BS. Also no chapter 90 powers unless in the parking lots.

Fitchburg State DREAMS of the day they can catch up with the likes of BSC, Salem, Westfield, Framingham State PD's. Definately the low-end of the State College System as far as the P.D. program goes. Between Admin and AFSCME, they can't move forward very much at all.
