NEW BEDFORD — A city woman allegedly driving drunk nearly collided with a State Police truck on its way to a sobriety checkpoint late Friday night, State Police said.
Desiree Burgo, 38, of 129 Pleasant St. was driving north in the southbound lanes of Route 140 while the State Police Breathalyzer Alcohol Testing Mobile headed south at about 11:10 p.m., according to the State Police.
Capt. Steven McCarthy, who was driving the BAT Mobile, saw Ms. Burgo get on the ramp at Exit 7 Braley Road going the wrong way, State Police said.
As she headed directly toward the truck, Capt. McCarthy turned on the emergency lights.
He was able to maneuver to stop Ms. Burgo 20 feet away from a collision, State Police said.
She was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation and a wrong way violation, State Police said.
The BAT Mobile continued on for the sobriety checkpoint with New Bedford police on Route 18, where seven motorists were arrested on charges of driving while under the influence of alcohol.
