MILLVILLE -- A Blackstone teen has been charged with drunken driving after police say she struck a Bellingham man, sending him onto the hood of a police cruiser Saturday night.
Ashley L. Lemek, 18, of 354 Blackstone St., faces eight charges after her 1996 Nissan Altima hit Sean Ryan Haswell, 20, around 11 p.m. on Chestnut Hill Road, according to police reports.
Lemek's car hit Haswell after he got out of his disabled 1998 Jeep Wrangler near Cork Circle and approached a police cruiser that pulled up behind him on the side of the road, police said.
The collision knocked Haswell into Patrolman Gregg Lewandowski's cruiser, then to the ground, police said.
Lemek, meanwhile, kept driving for another mile before her car crashed into a stone wall in front of 340 Chestnut Hill Road, police said. Her car then landed in a loose pile of stones on the other side of the street, police said.
Haswell complained to police about leg pain and was flown to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester by medical helicopter. He was treated and released, a hospital spokesman said last night.
Mendon firefighters assisted in the response, as Millville firefighters were called to a brush fire near 34 Chestnut Hill Road around 11:15 p.m.
"It was a mess after a mess after a mess," Millville Police Chief Timothy Ryan said.
Ryan and his officers found Lemek and a passenger, Sarah Marie Keddy, 18, of Douglas, in Lemek's Nissan farther up Chestnut Hill Road.
Witnesses said that after the Nissan stopped, one of the girls stepped out and threw a bottle into the woods, Ryan said. Police later recovered a Bacardi rum bottle, he said. Lemek was charged with operating under the influence of liquor, serious injury resulting; a marked lanes violation; being a minor in possession of alcohol; failure to wear a seat belt; leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury; having an open alcohol container; speeding and possession of a Class D substance.
Police say they seized a gram of marijuana from her vehicle.
Lemek was released several hours later on $1,040 bail, Ryan said.
Keddy was also released from protective custody yesterday. She will likely be summoned to court on a charge of being a minor in possession of alcohol, Ryan said.
Having arrested nine minors for alcohol and drug offenses last weekend, Ryan urged parents to talk to their children.
"Parents need to sit down with their kids again and educate them to the dangers of driving with alcohol in their cars," Ryan said. "This seems to be an individual problem that's starting to blossom into a community problem. That's 11 people now that we've had to deal with with alcohol in the past week in this town."
