I have a buddy who got hired in Fitchburg and will attending the Reading academy on September 11, 2006 and wants to know about the academy. The good, bad and the ugly. thanks for any and all input.

Well the bad of it is going to be his commute. I feel bad for him

From what I hear, Reading and Boylston are the two easiest Training Council academy's so it shouldn't be that bad at all... but yes, that commute wil suck.

Well it is an all new staff so who knows if this will be similar to the old reading academy.

what you mean all new staff? all DIs are gone

I had 9 Fitchburg recruits in my class at Reading several years ago... car pooling works wonders for the gas milage and made the commute fun.

As for the academy, I wouldn't say it is easy, but it's not too taxing either. Academics was big when I was there, including the upkeep of your academy notebooks as it was checked several times. I don't feel that I got cheated out of anything by attending Reading, and I thought that the instructors were top notch and that I learned just as much as other academies. Not sure who is still teaching and or who the lead instructors are, but I am sure they will guide you in the right direction. Remember why you are there - to learn and to go home safe at the end of each shift. Good luck to you!

Tell him don't worry about it. Any academy after 1994 is a joke. Once the MSP stopped running the Mass. Criminal justice Training. Just look at the recruits coming come out since they dropped the standards! What a fucking joke!

I too attended the Reading Academy. The academy was fairly balanced between academics (included both Rogers and Scheft) and PT. The academy director is no-nonsense and she means business, and won't hesitate to give people the boot if needed. Ask recruits from past classes.

There are no excuses, you either do PT or bye bye. Not like other academies where you get to hop on the stationary bike or just sit out. I ran on knees with painful bursitis for about 2 months while in the academy, mentally you just have to put the goal of becoming a police officer ahead of the pain. During PT, we ran around the lake and surrounding neighborhoods just over the line in Wakefield. It was about 5 - 7 miles give or take depending on where they wanted to run us. Usually run three days a week, a there was a day of arobics which could be done away with, and no PT on Defensive Tactics days. The DT instructors were good too.

Anything else, PM me.

I graduated from Reading about 3 years ago. It was not the toughest place. You did run and had to pass all exams. The exams were multiple choice. Not to bad. I am not sure how it is now. The most running was the lake.
