A lemonade stand started by a young boy has been a big hit. The boy is raising money to help the family of a fallen police officer.
So far, Tyler Minicozzi, 9, has squeezed out more than $5,000 in memory of Officer Scott Wertz.
Now Minicozzi's efforts are inspiring other acts of charity.
Minicozzi never dreamed his little lemonade stand would grow into something so significant.
"My goal was originally $1,000, but on the second day we already had $1,000," Minicozzi said.
By day seven, the boy had he far exceeded his expectations.
"We got $5,283.16," Minicozzi said.
It was an astronomical amount for a kid who just wanted to help a family he had never met.
"Oh, my God, the family is going to love it. I can't wait until I figure how much I really got, 'cause I didn't know how much they got at first. I was shocked," Minicozzi said.
Cletus Rivera is charged with murder after police said he shot Wertz after a chase.
Wertz leaves behind a wife and two young sons.
"Their dad was a cop and they helped a lot of people, so I wanted to help their family because their dad helped everybody, really," Minicozzi said.
Minicozzi said Wertz's wife cried when he hand delivered the money.
The Wertz family gave the boy a few things in return for his hard work and as their token of gratitude for the small boy with a big heart.
"For a child to do something like this on his own initiative and raise that kind of money and donate it to the Wertz family is just amazing," said Chief William Heim of the Reading Police Department.
"I felt proud of myself and everybody that helped. They should feel proud, too," Minicozzi said.
Minicozzi told Wertz's wife that he wanted her to use to it go to Disney World with the boys and she suggested he use half the money and go with his family, but the boy refused.
"Oh no. That money is all yours," Minicozzi told Wertz's wife.
