Cape National Guard Base To Get Intelligence Unit

BOURNE, Mass. -- Massachusetts National Guard officials say a new military intelligence unit will be located at Otis Air National Guard Base on the Cape Cod, which lost the 102nd Fighter Wing and 500 jobs last year in the latest round of Defense Department base closures.
The unit, which would review digital images from reconnaissance planes and unmanned flying vehicles, would return 390 Guard jobs to Cape Cod and could help keep the Coast Guard at Otis, the Cape Cod Times reported Saturday.
The fate of Otis has been uncertain since the Pentagon dissolved the fighter wing. The transition to a new mission will take place over the next two years, and officials said they will continue to advocate for more military jobs at Otis.

The Coast Guard's Air Station Cape Cod, which has rescue jets and helicopters, is located next to the National Guard base and uses its runways. Coast Guard officials have wanted to stay, but have been concerned about the financial burden.

State and Coast Guard officials have expressed interest in signing an agreement with the National Guard to share the approximate $17 million cost of operating and maintaining the air base, now paid for by the National Guard.

"This is a good step," U.S. Rep. William Delahunt, D-Quincy, told the Times. "It also signals, clearly and firmly, to the Coast Guard that they should feel comfortable in executing the memorandum of understanding."

Massachusetts National Guard Adjutant Gen. Oliver Mason said consideration for the Guard members on Cape Cod was the main reason the state decided to locate the new unit at Otis instead of elsewhere in the state. But he said it is also in the National Guard's interest to keep the Coast Guard there.

Mason said he's waiting for an economic analysis to make sure the costs are divided equitably before he recommends a memorandum of agreement to the National Guard Bureau, which oversees guard units nationwide.

Sure does make alot of sense moving the FW out to Barnes where the taxpayers will have to spend millions to upgrade and build the facilities required to support and maintain an active fighter mission....boy that BRAC sure makes alot of sense...

Question....I know it was just a movie but has anyone watched "United 93". In that it showed Otis AFB sending Fighters to intercept the Airliners. Now, If that were true, since the fighter wing is gone, who would send fighters to intercept the airliners now if we had another hijacking 9/11 situation?

Posted by: USMCMP5811

My best guess would be Westover. On another note, Otis wasn't the only base that sent fighters on 9/11 shortly after, Andrews AFB launched F-16's to patrol over D.C.

Just a movie????????????????

Ummm...I don't know where you have been, but that stuff really happened.

Otis was the first base to scramble fighters that morning. At the time it was one of only a few bases in the country that had fighters armed and fueled ( on alert status).

By the way... The 102nd Fighter Wing is still at Otis and it will be there for a few more years. After that it will move to Barnes Air National Guard Base in central Mass.

A little known fact is that the continental air defense of North America is tasked to the Air National Guard, not the Air Force. The F-15's from Otis were on full afterburner, racing towards Flight 93 with orders to shoot it down, when it crashed.

Trivia - Apollo 13 Astronaut Jack Swigert served as a fighter pilot at Otis from 1957-1960.

What good will it do to intercept an airliner anyway. Except to shoot it down.

i think it takes a special type of person to work at otis...you must have a unique outlook on shit...i mean i dont know anyone personally that works there im just going by what i saw on top gun...shit thats the navy...ah well im gonna go eat some SEAFOOD SALAD BITCHES....buh bye

Stay the hell away from Westover if you're an SP. Pretty messed up unit.

I realized it really happened. BUT the point is movies usually change things to make them more dramatic, to fit a timeline, or just because the director says so.

The Air National Guard is a component of the Air Force.

What good will it do? Prevent the loss of life of people on the ground and in large buildings. The Sears Tower, Empire State Building, Pentagon, White House, Capitol Building, etc.

Lose 100-200 people, or thousands? Any loss of life would be terrible, but the people on the hijacked aircraft would already be doomed unless they managed to take the plane back from the hijackers.
