Secret Clearance vs. Top Secret Clearance

Hey folks - I have a question about a Secret Clearance vs. Top Secret Clearance and working for a defense contractor.

What is the discernible difference between the two, what are the factors that could or would preclude you from obtaining one, and how broad is the level of security between a SC and a TSC.. Thanks.

Briefly. a secret clearance often requires a NACLC or ANACI type of BI where only a credit ck, fbi-iii ck and local police cks done to areas where you worked, lived and went to school as well as selective svc and a few others. Source interviews may be conducted.

a TS or TS w/ SCI add on require a full BI which in additon to the above requires about 10 sources to be interviewed. (employers, edu cks, neighbors and social sources) More stringent credit guidelines possibly as you will have higher access to classified info.

Its common for DISCO cases such as Raytheon, Northup and other def contractors. Also keep in my, many secret level positions one can be hired w/ an interim clearance while TS might have to be completed before you start work. This can sometimes take over 6mths depending on where and how many states you've lived in, worked, etc.

Hope this helps...

also any derog issues like bankruptcy, foreign preference, MH counseling, criminal or civil court judgments have to be investigated and resolved before your case is ready to be adjudicated

Beowolf - thanks a lot! That's great information.
So am I correct in assuming that a guy with an excellent credit rating, no CORI, no history of MI,
never part of any subversive organizations, and relatively good employment and character references
would be able to obtain a SC with little difficulty?

Yes, but what sometimes takes time is the investigations and adjudication process.

Ex-Raytheon offers some a job 9/1, it goes to a field investigator in 10/1, he finishes the work on 11/1, it gets reviewed by dod/disco on 1/1, raytheons FSO briefs you on 3/1.

theres the 6 mths...

not always this slow but can be. For your ex, w/ no derog issues, getting the sc isnt a problem, its all the bureaucratic red tape.

Anymore Q's feel free to ask or PM
