What is the age required to become a dispatcher in the state of MA? (Is it really 21? Or 18 after taking the civil service exams?) Does anyone have any information in regards to testing/ exams, and how to prepare?

And final question; is dispatching a repetitive job, or is there always something new?

You need a high school diploma, be able to speak AND write ENGLISH !! (no, it doesn't need to be your first language either... but you must be fluent)
Have a clear background.
You need to be able to type.
You need to be willing to be trained.
Handle pressure.
Keep track of incident details, in detail.
Be honest.
Be nice to the nastiest people.

Lot's of towns hold entrance exams that you pay to take.... I don't know much about those.
MSP will send a trooper knocking on doors in your neighborhood during your background check.
You really can't have anything to hide.

It can be repetitive as in boring, but it can also be different. You'll get alot of the same kinds of calls, but you'll also always see a influx of new calls. Sounds weird, but that's the way it is.

Do a sit a long with an agency that your interested in working for and see if it's something you CAN and WANT to do. Age is probably dependent on each individual agency and not by any state restrictions, but I could be wrong. That's just the way it is in Illinois. My agency is 21, but others are 18.
