Drunken-driving suspect slams into house

By Julie Manganis
Staff writer

BEVERLY - A woman was charged with drunken driving after crashing into a neighbor's house early Sunday, then backing up and driving down the street to her own home.
Debra Warren, 51, of 22 Federal St., Beverly, then went on a profane tirade against the officers who showed up to arrest her, tried to burn one of them with a cigarette, and then tried to bite the other, police said.
Residents of 25 Federal St. told police they saw a red Volkswagen Jetta with a handicapped placard on the windshield coming toward their home just before 1 a.m. Sunday. The car drove across a small lawn and into the front steps, the neighbors told police.
They then saw the driver of the badly damaged Jetta back up and drive down the street to her own home.
Warren, who uses a wheelchair, was belligerent with the two patrolmen, Erik Abrahamson and Darlene Prinz, calling them "rookies" who were wasting her time, police said.
At one point, she asked Prinz to get her a cigarette while they were waiting for an ambulance but then allegedly tried to burn the officer. She then tried to bite Abrahamson.
At the hospital, she continued to complain, according to police, even ripping an intravenous line from her arm.
Warren is free on personal recognizance following her arraignment yesterday in Salem District Court, where she pleaded not guilty to drunken driving. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Sept. 28.
