The city of Monterey is putting its police recruits on the fast track in an effort to get them through the interview process and into a job as soon as possible.
Officials said the Baby Boom generation of police officers is retiring and younger people are not going into the field at a time when demand for officers is rising.
The Monterey Police Department needs to hire nine officers to maintain staffing at the current level of 56 sworn positions.
Trainees, academy graduates and officers from other communities making lateral moves are being put on a fast track.
"Someone could come in here -- a lateral -- and drop off an application. We would return that almost immediately and do an oral panel and set up a chief's interview and continue the process like that," Monterey Police Department spokesman Sgt. Bill Clark said.
The process is so fast that a potential candidate could find themselves in an interview the same day an application is dropped off at human resources.
Officials said the idea is to identify potential police officer candidates quickly, get the background checks done and make an offer before the competition does.
"The entire process of becoming a police officer deals with integrity, with honor, with honesty. We test for that, we monitor that all the way through the process," Clark said.
A police officer candidate must be at least 21 years old, have a high school diploma and a valid driver's license.
Candidates must pass physical and psychological tests and possess key core values.
The salary range for police officers in Monterey in $60,000 to $73,000 a year. There is a $5,000 signing bonus for officers making lateral moves.
Monterey police officials said they hope to get some young people who grew up in the city to apply for these jobs because when they hire from other states or other cities, those officers often eventually return to their homes.
Anyone interested in applying for a job as a police officer in Monterey or would like more information about the job may visit the city's human resources department or visit the Monterey Police Department Web site .
