Somerville police officer indicted on child rape charges

The Associated Press

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—
A Somerville police officer was indicted Tuesday for allegedly raping a 23-month-old girl in his home.

Keith Winfield, 31, is charged with sexually assaulting the girl in October, while she was in his home in Melrose.

Authorities say Winfield assaulted the girl with a hot object, causing serious burns, which developed over the next 24-36 hours. The girl's mother brought her to a doctor the following day. The doctor referred the girl to a Boston hospital, and police were contacted after doctors there suspected the girl had been sexually and physically abused.

Winfield is charged with two counts of rape of a child, indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.

Prosecutors did not say how Winfield knew the girl or why she was in his home.

Winfield's attorney could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday. A call to the Somerville Police Department was not immediately returned.

Winfield was scheduled to be arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court on Tuesday afternoon.

Now ordinarily I think of suicide as cowardice...but in this case, it might be just the remedy.

Absolutely shameful! Another black eye for those of us that actually represent this profession with some pride.

Did anyone see Ch7 tonight at 11. They had footage from the courtroom. I'd love to say more but I have to refrain.

A Somerville cop was indicted today in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of a now-2-year-old girl.
Charges were formally brought against Keith Winfield, a 31-year-old Melrose resident who had been serving as a patrolman for six years, after a nine-month investigation by Melrose Police Department and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office’s Child Abuse Prosecution Division.
Winfield, who grew up in Somerville and graduated from Somerville High School, pled not guilty to two counts of rape of a child, indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury. He was released on personal recognizance. He’s due back in court for a pre-trial hearing Sept. 1.
According to a city spokesman, Winfield turned his badge and gun into the department in March 2005 when the investigation began. Winfield “agreed to resign” yesterday from the city, according to spokesman Tom Champion.
“Scum,” Winfield’s lawyer, Patrick Murphy, called a crew of reporters waiting for comment. “Are you here to ruin somebody’s life?”
According to the Middlesex District Attorney’s office, on October 13, 2005, the defendant is alleged to have sexually assaulted a then 23-month-old girl while she was in his care at his home in Melrose.
Investigators said Winfield allegedly assaulted the child with a hot object, which caused serious burns that developed over the course of the next 24-36 hours. The child’s mother brought the child to a local doctor for treatment the following day, and the doctor referred the child to a Boston hospital.
Upon examining the child, doctors suspected that she had been sexually and physically abused, and police were contacted, according to the District Attorney’s office. The child was admitted to the hospital for treatment.
Winfield knew the alleged victim.

If I live to be 100, I will never understand how an adult can find a child, or in this instance, a toddler sexually arousing. What fuckin gasket gets blown in the mind of these people that could cause you to do something so heinous to someone so innocent and pure. Not even 2 years old yet. Heaven help us.

I dont think it was about being atracted to the victim, more like torture. I happened to be in that courtroom waiting to give testimony in an unrelated case, when this trash entered his plea. Smug bastard. He was smiling his ass off while talking to his lawyer. Lets just say that the charges are false... ...would any one here even think to be happy while being in cuffs? In a courtroom? On the other side of the defendants box? Oh and by the way, the Judge let him go without bail. The ADA stated that this guy is not a flight risk, Does any one here believe that he is not a flight risk?

its so disturbing to see sick and twisted people in society that end up doing this to harmless silent victims.

You're right, he is an absolute flight risk. Like someone else stated, a cop and child rapist in prison won't last. In a situation like this it is nothing but IDEAL for a shitbag to run for it. Get bailed for nothing, pack a bag and take off.

Keith was in my academy class...37th. MPOC...he was a fu*k up then and he barely made it through...he was one "class 2" shy of being booted....the only thing that kept him in was out of nowhere he suddenly came up with this great cadence during marches...it was a song really, but it sounded great and Degutis loved it and we looked sharp marching to it....

.....like I said he barely made it through the 23 weeks...they say the academy brings out the "real you"...in this case I say that's a true statement cuz he really showed himself to be a fu*k up.....although he really shined during the illegal drug classes, he knew all his "grams" and "classes" and was well versed on the whole drug "vernacular"....

....I heard he didn't last long after he got off his FTO...I heard allegations of him being arrested for 209a....I also heard that while he was on a detail at a movie theater he was found sh*tfaced in a bathroom stall with his gunbelt on the floor...........

....all of what I said is stuff I have heard "through the grapevine" and should not be at all construed as fact....Keith deserves his day in court....and I hope for his sake these charges prove false....but if these charges are true Keith.....and only you would know this....I would recommend you take a previous posters suggestion and make sure the barrel is fully in your mouth and pointed slightly up...cuz an ex-cop, child rapist surely won't last long in prison....

.....god help you, and god help that poor little girl, so innocent.......
