Anyone know if Holy Cross campus PD is armed and if they are a good Dept?

Posted by: mikeyd1313

they are not armed. As far as the dept, they have plenty of details with the worcester tornadoes baseball team and ot. The only problem I ran into was that the fact of it being a private high cost college. Administration has stripped officer discretion on arrests, etc. If you want a low stress job otherwise, its a great place. any other question you can send me a message.

Great place? I didn't think so. It's the best job to be "retired on-duty"

Posted by: mikeyd1313

well i pretty much said that but in a nicer way. If you want to get paid to basically do nothing, its a good job. If you like the type of job, you will be very disappointed in this place.

Posted by: SinePari

If you're gonna be unarmed and bored, you might as well have tons of eye candy walking around.

Posted by: 5-0

That is a good point SinePari.

Here is another one. The hiring climate Massachusetts is difficult at best, so if you have an opportunity to get hired, get put through the SSPA, build your resume, and get some experience...Do it.

At least it's not Fisher College..?

Posted by: mikeyd1313

thats a good point, but lately holy cross has just been hiring current SPO's because most leave after the academy ends. Its very true about just getting the job and experience though, it still counts as a job.

Look at previous topics about this place.......MINI VAN CRUISERS!

I know a few of the officers there...

They have a new chief that is a former trooper, and she has some ideas of changing things there. They are adding staff right now because slots went unfilled by the previous regime. They are putting on four and have plenty details with the Tornadoes. They do have a mini van, and a equinox (SUV). They are going to stay with the SUV theme because of the large hill that the campus is on. The powers that be think a CVPI would be negated during the winter. They do not carry...firearms or batons right now, but if the new chief follows what every other former trooper college chief has done, things should change up there for the better soon.

Hope this helps anyone who was interested. Be safe!

Does there patch say POLICE? and do they carry oc and baton?

Hey Emerson College has a mini van too!!!!!!

Posted by: jyanis

Patch and cruisers say police...oc - yes, baton - no.

I have an interview this afternoon there. Looking forward to it. I see it as a stepping stone, and at least I might get the sspo academy if hired. Better than what I am doing now.

Posted by: SSPO#11

I also know a lot of guys that work there and that HAVE worked there. The patch does say POLICE but it's #5 font and barely readable. When I was there we actually demanded a new patch since our old one was purple and said "PUBLIC SAFETY" on both sides. But make no mistake the word "PUBLIC SAFETY" is still there is the most giant font ever at the top.

Don't expect to be called a police officer at all...you will be a PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER.

I went for my interview and they told me I would be wasting my time there. My pay would be cut in half and I would be doing the same stuff I am doing right now.

Posted by: SSPO#11

Smart man.

"I would be wasting my time there. "

I'm curious how an agency or someone in the Dept. (HR?) explained/ implied this to you?

During the interview I was told that they are not police, I would not be doing police work, the job is basically what I am doing now as a security officer, the pay would be half of what I make now and that I would be wasting my time.

Not exactly what you want to hear from a department that you're applying for, but at least they were up front and honest. Good luck with the job hunt.

Well your Security Department can’t send you to the SSPO Academy. I know a few who have successfully used Holy Cross as stepping stone to bigger and better things. Academy trained Police Officer looks much better on a resume than security officer.

Posted by: screamineagle

tell me about it . I was interested in the job for the academy, but it wasnt in my hands.

Good point but it sounds to me like they are looking to weed out those candidates looking to grab the academy and run. That's probably why they are being so brutally honest during the interview process. I'm sure there are plenty of people that are perfectly content with collecting a paycheck and bennies without having to do too much heavy lifting.

The turn over there is unbelievable.....there are a few that are still there that make the job almost unbearable. Be advised you have to closed EVERY window, lock EVERY door, shut off EVERY light on campus. EVERY night.

I am really convinced that working there makes people go crazy.

Then work days, and check out all the eye candy! Hell, I've been know to "monitor traffic" around College Square during those warm spring days...

Ok. I know what everyone thinks about Holy Cross and the type of policing that you will do. I understand all of that. I am just letting peeps know that I got a conditional offer from them, and accepted. I have been struggling to get my foot in the door for 3.5 years, and finally got my LE break. I am really psyched, and can't wait to get started!
They were very honest about the environment, and the type of officer they are looking for, and have been extremely open with any questions I had. At least they are letting people know what to expect on the job. No bait and switch. Thanks to Masscops for all of the archived articles and posts I have read (100's). Thanks to Kozmo Kramer, Marinecop, and kktref for their advice (don't know if you guys remember my Pm's). And thanks to Gil for providing this resource. To anyone trying to get on the job, just stay motivated, take tests, workout, and your time will come.

Congratulations on getting your career started. I don't know much about HC PD but I can tell you one thing, if you ask 10 people about there department than your likely to get 10 different answers ranging from heaven to hell. Most jobs are what you make of it. Good luck.

Hey 5-0, Congrats on the offer. Any way that you can break into any type of LE job in Massachusetts, take it. You know as well as I do that becoming a PO in this state is one of the hardest things to do. I did the same thing that you did. I started at a small college Public Saftey Dept. (unarmed) that put me through an academy. I then moved on to a larger Armed PD in Boston. Now I am in the final stages of my BG investigation for BPD.

Go into HC with an open mind and make the job what YOU want and not what other people want for you. Take advantage of any training that is offered and get some experience. This can only make you more attractive to other future departments.

Wasn't just the head of HC police armed at one time? I seem to recall just one armed person there.
It was like that at Becker too as I recall. One armed person. But I believe there was only 2 guys at Becker anyways. LOL

Some colleges arm their departments by arming supervisors 1st, kinda like a trial run type of thing. This may be what you are thinking of. I'm pretty sure that this is what Becker is doing right now. I also believe that Bently did it this way as well. I've never heard of anyone at Holy Cross ever being armed tho.
