But one prominent Democrat, among others, is opposed !!! KENNEDY !!!
Inside OSHA
Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) charges a Republican-backed amendment that prohibits the confiscation of guns during an emergency puts police officers and first responders in danger. The amendment, sponsored by Sen. David Vitter (R-LA), was added to the Homeland Security appropriations bill during a July 13 Senate vote. During the rescue and response after Hurricane Katrina police officers and first responders had to pull back from rescuing victims because they were being shot at by snipers. The amendment "prohibits the confiscation of a firearm during an emergency or major disaster if the possession of such firearm is not prohibited under Federal or State law." Kennedy accuses the Republican leadership of backing "another special-interest, anti-law enforcement measure that strips away the rights of law enforcement to respond to public safety emergencies." Kennedy also accuses the National Rifle Association of setting the Senate's Republican agenda. "This proposal is part of the NRA's nationwide campaign to target the nation's Mayors and Police Chiefs. With fear tactics and inflammatory rhetoric, the NRA is looking for pledges that the people protecting our communities will never confiscate a weapon during a natural disaster. The NRA's perverse response to the devastating tragedy caused by Hurricane Katrina has been to launch an aggressive fund-raising campaign to undermine the very law enforcement and public safety officials who protect us during times of crisis," Kennedy says in a prepared statement. But Republicans were not the only backers of the amendment. Several key Democrats also voted in favor of the provision. Democratic Sens. Robert Byrd (WV), Barack Obama (IL), Ben Nelson (NE), Bill Nelson (FL), John Rockefeller IV (WV), Evan Bay (IN), Jeff Bingaman (NM), Russ Feingold (WI), Patty Murray (WA), Joseph Biden (DE), Patrick Leahy (VT), Joseph Lieberman (CT) and Mary Landrieu (LA) all voted in favor of the amendment.
Emergency Gun Confiscation?......Confiscation under any guise is already illegal and unconstitutional. What part of "Shall Not be infringed" do they not understand?
Kennedy is pandering to the fearful sheeple again, trying to garner their favor by opposing the bill. The day that fat blowhard dies, the beer is on me.

I'm with you, NFA! I'm surprised his liver hasn't rebelled by now . Only in America can a no-talent/unemployable POS who murdered a women (criminally negligent homocide at the least) rise to such a level by being ELECTED by supposedly free people . Lemmings.
Confiscating my "guns" will prove to be a very expensive undertaking. In the words of the sergeant (actor Brian Donleavy) in the movie "Beau Geste": "I promise you.". And also: "...the next one won't hurt as much as the first one did...".

So we're supposed to confiscate people's guns when the rule of law has broken down, and the police CAN'T protect people? Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that the moment that law-abiding citizens MOST need their guns? Believe me, I'm worried least about lawful gun owners....if I were going alone into a "hot zone", there's nothing I wouldn't want more than a few dozen armed, motivated citizens to help me out!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it a little ridiculous to think that a person who would shoot at police and first responders during a state of emergency would willingly give up their guns? And aren't those the people who obviously do not obey the law in the first place?

Is anyone surprised? Lets use any excuse to take away constitutional freedom(s) from law abiding people.....
I took an oath, both in the military and upon appointment as a cop, to "uphold and defend" the Constitution. WTF? What would you rather have during the next critical incident; the majority of decent folk able to defend themselves and possibly back you up, or a small minority of persons with criminal history and intent roaming around unchecked by the good citizenry?
Thanks again Teddy, but NO THANKS!!!!!!!!
