The next day will be critical for an Atlanta Police officer who suffered serious brain injuries in a collision with an ambulance in southeast Atlanta Friday night, authorities said Saturday.
The officer's car was demolished after hitting an ambulance -- both had been called to a fatal shooting in southeast Atlanta. Both vehicles were traveling at a high rate of speed.
Once freed from the wreckage of his cruiser, the officer, identified as Peter Faatz, was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital.
Atlanta Police chief Richard Pennington says that the officer remains in critical condition, and that doctors are concerned about the next 24-hour period in their hopes for the Faatz's survival.
According to Pennington, Faatz had only been with the police force since last November.
Several officers have vowed to remain at the hospital all night to offer their thoughts and prayers for the officer's recovery.
