Man Who Abuses Duck Gets Probation

http://wcbstv.com/watercooler/local_...203193757.html

An Atlantic City man has been sentenced to three years' probation and community service at an animal shelter for beating a duck.

Donald Chapman pleaded guilty to animal cruelty a few months ago after accepting a plea deal for the March 15 incident. He acknowledged that he kicked the Mallard duck and beat it with a broom in the parking lot of the Fox Chase development he worked at in Galloway Township.

State Superior Court Judge James Isman sentenced Chapman on Friday, warning him against harming any more animals and ordering him to pay $276 for the cost of the duck's care. He will have to volunteer at the Atlantic County Animal Shelter in Pleasantville.

"I want him to serve it at the shelter so that he interacts with the animals that have to be euthanized so that he can gain a respect for life," said Nancy Beall, president of the Atlantic County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Beall's organization retrieved the duck after the beating and took it to the Galloway Animal Hospital for treatment.

Officials said the duck is still alive and doing well.
