A Lynn mother of three was arraigned Thursday in connection with a bizarre attack on another woman that allegedly included kidnap, rape and assault with hot peppers. Juana Perez, 28, of Western Avenue, was ordered held in lieu of $20,000 surety or $2,000 cash bail following her appearance in Lynn District Court. Essex County Assistant District Attorney Ashlee Logan had asked that she be held on $100,000 bail due to the nature of the charges. According to police reports unveiled in the courtroom, an enraged Perez believed the unrelated female victim was having an affair with her husband, and held her against her will and smeared her with hot jalapeno-like peppers in juice. At one point during the alleged assault, Perez allegedly instructed one of her daughters to bring an additional cup of the hot peppers in juice, based on court documents. Perez, a Guatemalan immigrant who works at a local laundry, was charged with kidnap, rape, assault, and two counts of assault and battery, with hot peppers. Alison Bloomquist, Perez' defense lawyer, asked for a bail reduction, noting the mother has a job and is responsible for her three children, ages 12, 7 and 4. Perez' husband was in the courtroom but declined comment. Although Perez was once arrested on a minor criminal offense, the matter was continued without a finding, Bloomquist said. District Court Judge Michael C. Laurenzano also ordered Perez to stay away from the victim's Western Avenue apartment. The defendant was bailed later Thursday by Felipe Lopez. The case was continued to Aug. 17.
