'Nicest Murderer' Sentenced In Fla. Case

http://www.local6.com/news/9546626/detail.html

LARGO, Fla. -- Pinellas sheriff's detective Ed Judy called 55-year-old Barbara Ann Burns "the nicest murderer I've ever met."

In a rare move, prosecutors allowed Burns to plead guilty to manslaughter for shooting her mentally disabled sister, Debbie, in the head in August 2004. She will receive a sentence of 15 years in prison, but with time served she may be out in less than 12 years, the St. Petersburg Times reported Wednesday.

She was originally charged with first-degree murder in the slaying, a charge that carried the possibility of life in prison

I would not expect her to be a danger in the future," prosecutor Kendall Davidson said.

"It's just an unusual, compelling situation," said Michael Hays, the assistant public defender who represented Burns. "She didn't have any prior criminal history at all. She was just in a situation where she just snapped."

Debbie Burns was killed on Aug. 15, 2004. Barbara Burns moved out on Oct. 1, according to detectives. The body was found May 4, 2005
