Judge rules that naked Edison cop must forfeit his job

http://www.thnt.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ar.../NEWS/60717009

A Dunellen Municipal Court Judge has ordered that "naked'' Edison cop Ioannis Mpletsakis be fired immediately from his job with the police department.

The forfeiting order, issued by Municipal Court Judge John Leonard and announced today, permanently bars Mpletsakis from holding any public office or position.

The order was issued in connection with a July 20, 2005 crash in which Mpletsakis was found guilty of hindering his own apprehension, a disorderly person's offense. On June 15, he was ordered to pay about $665 in fines. He also was cleared of charges of reckless assault by auto and the leaving the scene of
an accident.

After Mpletsakis' conviction, Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Brian Gillet, on behalf of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's office filed a motion for the forfeiture of Mpletsakis' public employment, as well as permanent disqualification from any future public employment or public position.

According to New Jersey law, forfeiture of public office is mandatory when a police officer is convicted of an offense involving dishonesty or which touches upon his public office, according to the prosecutor's office. Such forfeiture effects a
lifetime disqualification on holding future public office.

Township spokesman Jerry Barca said the municipality agrees with the judge's decision.

Mpletsakis' attorney, Darren M. Gelber of Woodbridge, said he will appeal the hindering conviction.

Mpletsakis, who has been suspended without pay since the incident, crashed his BMW into a box truck on Route 27 near Talmadge Road on July 20, 2005. A passenger of the box truck was uninjured.

Off duty at the time, Mpletsakis got out of his car and ran naked from the scene. He was found crouching behind a car in the parking lot of a building by a colleague and was driven home to get clothing and then returned to the scene.

The case was tried in Dunellen to avoid a conflict of interest

Wow, judges there can rule to get someone fired. I guess there are no unions there.
