A MARRIED man has been jailed after concocting a bizarre suicide pact with his ex-wife.
David Workman bought former spouse Jean Day knee-high leather boots and rubber gloves to wear and assorted sex toys for them to use as he planned a joint overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol.
Winchester Crown Court heard he was turned on by the thought of having sex at the time of death.
But after he travelled from South Wales to her Basingstoke home, Miss Day refused to wear the outfit he'd given her.
The 52-year-old abandoned her and she tried to take her life alone.

She was only saved when a friend discovered her in bed, surrounded by empty bottles of pills, and called paramedics.

Prosecutor Megan Topliss said Workman, from Dumfries Street, Aberdare, and Miss Day had kept touch since their split in 2000 after eight years of marriage.

Miss Topliss said Workman, who subsequently remarried, had written her numerous letters - one titled "Our date with destiny" and another where he'd written, "suicide with Jean is my prime objective".

"In another he says, 'Yes I do get excitement by the thought of suicide with you'," Miss Topliss told the court.

When police arrested Workman, he admitted one count of aiding and abetting an attempted suicide.

The Aberdare man stood in the dock with his head bowed on July 7 as Judge Christopher Harvey Clark QC sentenced him to 18 months.

"I am satisfied that you encouraged Jean Day to attempt to commit suicide," said the judge. What makes this case extraordinary is the motive that you have for so doing.

"In my judgement it was linked to the evident excitement you obtained from bizarre sexual pornography.

"You obtained a sexual thrill and gratification from it and you persuaded Jean Day to take her own life.

"It was good fortune that she survived. It was certainly no thanks to you that she did.

"The nature of your motive distinguishes this case from where someone is prepared to assist someone commit suicide for reasons of mercy, to end a life of extreme pain or disability.

"It is because of the nature of your motive that I consider this case can only merit a sentence of custody."

Workman spoke only to thank the judge as he was led away.

Timothy Compton, defending Workman, said his client had lost his nerve, but texted Miss Day after leaving to tell her not to go through with it.

"However, he accepts that his decision not to alert the authorities to what was happening was morally reprehensible," said Mr Compton.

"Miss Day said after her ex-husband left, she decided she was going to do it on her own. She told police, 'He didn't make me do it'.

"He is profoundly ashamed and sorry for what he has done," he said, adding that Workman's wife was standing by him.

"He is obviously concerned that his marriage will break down because of this," Mr Compton added.
