MABSCOTT -- A former Rainelle police officer has been accused of impersonating an officer after he displayed a badge and police identification to another officer during a traffic stop.

Rainelle Police Chief J.T. Stevens said he does not know how Danny Ray Price, 29, of Beckley obtained the badge and ID. Police officials believed Price had turned in his badge and ID when he left the force in late June.

Mabscott Patrolman S. Burnside pulled over Price's vehicle early on July 6 after it traveled left of the center line and he observed the tail light on the driver's side was not working, according to a criminal complaint filed in Raleigh County Magistrate Court.

Price allegedly showed the patrolman a badge he pulled out of a wallet, and told Burnside that he was a Rainelle police officer, the complaint said.

When another Mabscott officer arrived to assist, Price allegedly told him the same thing. Burnside then spoke to a Mabscott police captain and to the Rainelle police chief, who both told him Price was no longer a police officer, the complaint said.

Stevens said Price had not been a Rainelle police officer since June 29, when he was denied permission to continue his police training because of conduct unbecoming to an officer. Price is charged with impersonating a police officer and providing false information to a police officer. He remains free on $5,000 bond.
