The District of Columbia police chief declared a crime emergency Tuesday in response to a string of violence that included the killing of British activist and political volunteer Alan Senitt.

Senitt's death was one of 13 homicides this month, police said. In the past 30 days, robberies have increased 14 percent and assaults with deadly weapons jumped 18 percent.

The move allows commanders more flexibility to adjust officers' schedules and reassign them to high-crime areas. Senitt was found with his throat slit early Sunday.

"We have seen a troubling increase in crime in recent weeks, even with the hard work and best efforts of our officers," Chief Charles H. Ramsey said in a statement.

Also Tuesday, the police commander whose officers investigated Senitt's killing was reassigned after making racially sensitive comments at a community meeting about the crime. Cmdr. Andy Solberg spoke Monday night to residents of Washington's upscale Georgetown neighborhood who had gathered to express concerns about the slaying.

"I would think that at 2 o'clock in the morning on the streets of Georgetown, a group of three people, one of whom is 15 years old, one of whom is a bald chunky fat guy, are going to stand out," said Solberg, who is white. "They were black. This is not a racial thing to say that black people are unusual in Georgetown. This is a fact of life."

Solberg was transferred to the department's security services division, said Sgt. Joe Gentile, a police spokesman. Ramsey, who is black, said he had received no complaints about the remarks but felt the move was necessary.

Solberg, reached by phone Tuesday night, declined to comment.

Senitt was a volunteer for the potential presidential campaign of former Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warner.

I'm sure the good citizens of DC will fully support the police when they start to really crack down on the thugs.

I mean after all they re-elected that crackhead Marion Berry so they're clearly a very supportive bunch...

What this article fails to mention is that once they were done killing this British guy, they set upon his lady friend & tried to rape her. I guess the liberal media doesn't want to rock the P.C. boat by giving all the details of this heinous crime.
Maybe he would have been better off staying in Britain where "Gun Control" efforts have led to increased crime. ...... from my cold, dead fingers I say.

Non-white citizens commit crimes? Who'd a thunk it!!?? Well, can't let that information leak out...

But on a lighter note, the victim was working for a commie...er...democrat presidential campaign: just think, the guy was killed by a member of the democratic party's oppressed victims groups: criminals. Ironic, isn't it?

2 attacks reported just hours after crime emergency declared in D.C.

WASHINGTON- Two groups of tourists were robbed at gunpoint on the National Mall, just hours after the police chief declared a crime emergency in the U.S. capital in response to a string of violence that included the killing of a British activist.

The activist, Alan Senitt, was attacked in the Georgetown area on Sunday, his throat was slit and police say the attackers attempted to rape his companion. It was the 13th homicide in the city this month. Robberies are up 14 percent, and armed assaults have jumped 18 percent in the past 30 days.

On Wednesday, U.S. Park Police were looking for connections between the latest Mall robberies and three similar incidents in the area in late May. There have been no arrests in any of those cases.

On Tuesday night, two women were robbed at gunpoint by two men dressed in all black, said U.S. Park Police Sgt. Scott Fear. About 15 minutes later, a family of four was robbed by suspects with the same description, he said.

Though no one was injured, Fear said there were similarities to three violent attacks on the National Mall in May. In one case, a 17-year-old woman was sexually assaulted.

"We try to prevent this from happening," Fear said. "We're going to reallocate our resources. We're going to see what improvements we can make."

District of Columbia Police Chief Charles Ramsey declared a crime emergency in the city after Senitt, a volunteer for the potential presidential campaign of former Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warner, was killed.

The crime emergency declaration allows commanders more flexibility to adjust officers' schedules and reassign them to high-crime areas.

The tourist-friendly National Mall, a grassy area lined by museums leading up to the Capitol building, is under the jurisdiction of U.S. Park Police rather than D.C. police. It is usually considered safe. But the recent crimes against tourists have raised calls for a larger police presence.

Police are asking Mall visitors to "be our eyes and ears," Fear said. "We're going to ask them to be vigilant."

So what is exactly "New" down there other than the poor slob was British and working for a DemocRat? Crime has been rampant down there for decades since it's a non-gun friendly city. Unless you're a cop or a high level pol, you ain't got a gat and the criminal scumbag majority know that.

Even during Police Week in May, there's an extra 10,000 on & off duty cops with guns there and the crime is still of epic proportions. It only moves a few streets over during Police Week festivities. Mr. Bad Guy knows this and tends to shy away from groups of large armed individuals who they've had past bad dealings with.

They should send in a Marine Battalion or two fresh off the fight in Iraq to clean it up if you ask me. No Questions Asked. No reporters with cameras or brass present. Take the 10% who do 98% of the crime and poof, they're gone. HC
